Each fantasy football season, a tight end or two will emerge from the back end of the pool. For someone cheating the tight end position, an open mind and a quick trigger after Week 1 can sometimes lead to a helpful player.

After presenting my 2023 fantasy football tight end values, here are my best 2023 Deep Sleeper Tight Ends to target on draft day this summer.

Isaiah Likely (Baltimore Ravens)

The success of Likely in his rookie season (36/373/3 on 60 targets) almost makes him a must-handcuff to Mark Andrews. I’m a fan of Charlie Kolar (who missed most of his rookie year), so the usage of both players will be critical to securing the next tight end on the depth chart in Baltimore.

Likely fits a big wide receiver profile (6’4” and 240 lbs.) with two impressive games (6/77/1 and 8/103) already on his NFL resume. The Ravens feature the tight end in their power run game, pointing to fewer targets for Baltimore’s secondary wide receivers. Likely is the 22nd-ranked tight end in late July. In his final year at Coastal Carolina, he caught 59 of his 78 targets for 912 yards and 12 touchdowns.

It seems like tight ends are becoming more valuable as each fantasy season arrives. Much of that value can be attributed to the lack of depth available throughout the position. Also, many leagues have begun to mitigate that weakness by rewarding bonus points for tight end receptions.

Regardless of your league’s settings, securing a reliable weekly tight end is a huge advantage in fantasy football. And since there are so few elite options, most fantasy football managers will be searching for the top 2023 fantasy tight end values to target on draft day.

Here are the top-5 2023 fantasy tight end values that you should consider when assembling your roster this summer.

Last year, Travis Kelce (317.3 fantasy points) dominated the tight end pool. He had more than a 100-point edge over the second-best option (T.J. Hockenson – 216.40 fantasy points) while doubling the output of the sixth-ranked (Tyler Higbee – 152.00 fantasy points). Kelce had a floor of 15 fantasy points in 12 of his 17 starts, doubling the second-highest player (George Kittle – 6) in this area. Only three running backs and three wide receivers outscored Kelce in 2022 in PPR formats.

Eight tight end games with 30-plus fantasy points came from the top 12 best players. The TE1s scored between 20 and 29.99 fantasy points 17 times (12 by the top four tight ends). The other remaining options delivered just nine outcomes in this category.

During the year, there were 210 games by tight ends with a floor of 10 fantasy points. Here’s the breakdown by groupings:

TE1 – 96
TE2 – 56
TE3 – 38
TE4 – 14
TE5 – 6

Below the top 18 tight ends last season, there were only four games with more than 20 fantasy points – Jordan Akins – 25., Mike Gesicki – 24.9, Mo Alie-Cox – 26.5, Shane Zylstra – 25.6, and Trey McBride – 20.8).

2023 Free Agent Rankings: Tight Ends

There are lots of arguments for having the NFL Draft take place prior to the start of unrestricted free agency. Similar to the lackluster group of free-agent wideouts, the 2023 Free Agent Rankings: Tight Ends is sorely lacking. However, from a fantasy perspective, it is always good to be prepared for roster turnover. Here are our 2022 free agent rankings: tight ends. Also, check out our 2023 free-agent Quarterback, Running Back, and Wide Receiver rankings. Potential Starters PLAYER TEAM AGE REC YDS TD Dalton Schultz DAL 27 57 577 5 Evan Engram JAX 29 73 766 4 Mike Gesicki MIA 28 28 316 5 Irv Smith Jr. MIN 25 25 182 2 Hayden Hurst CIN 30 52 414 2 There aren’t many landing spots for Dalton Schultz that won’t be a downgrade. Schultz has built up a solid rapport with QB Dak Prescott. The result has been three consecutive top-10 fantasy campaigns for the soon-to-be 27-year-old. Should he re-sign with the Cowboys, Schultz remains a solid TE1 with top-5 upside. Evan Engram is annually overlooked. Engram capitalized on his one-year deal with the Jaguars and posted top-5 PPR numbers in 2022. However, it was only Engram’s fourth-best outing from a points-per-game perspective. Should the veteran tight end land with a QB1, expect Engram to be a solid value once again. He should be able to earn about $10 million annually on the open market. Miami’s new offense didn’t do Mike Gesicki any favors. Gesicki posted his worst numbers since his 2018 rookie campaign. As a result, he won’t earn anywhere near the franchise tag deal ($10.9m) he played under in 2022. But in the right offense, Gesicki can still be a solid downfield option. Speaking of forgettable 2022 showings, Irv Smith Jr. spent half the season on IR with an ankle injury. Smith commanded a lot of sleeper interest last offseason. However, the acquisition of T.J. Hockenson assures that Smith will have to play elsewhere. The 24-year-old is just about to enter his prime and can still be a solid fantasy TE2. Let’s call Hayden Hurst a fringe NFL starter. In two of his five seasons, Hurst has been solid. Both of those showings came playing the majority of reps in the first year of a new system. Ideally, re-signing with the Bengals would work best for Hurst’s 2023 prospects. However, Hurst should attract plenty of attention from other NFL squads. Austin Hooper can fill in as needed. He might sign a one-year “prove it” deal but Hooper will have trouble generating top-20 fantasy numbers even if he was a starter. Robert Tonyan will always have that glorious 2020 season. Even in a 2022 Green Bay offense desperate for pass catchers, Tonyan had a career-low 8.9 yards per target and only caught 2 touchdowns. If Tonyan can’t be a reliable option with Aaron Rodgers under center, he is not a player to be targeted on draft day. The sleeper of this group is Foster Moreau. Still just 25, Moreau had seven games with 3-plus grabs and filled in nicely for the injured Darren Waller. Moreau flashed enough to draw some interest around the league as a potential starter. Therefore, their fantasy potential is very limited. Some can be decent NFL contributors but are only fantasy-relevant in the deepest of leagues. 2022 NFL Free Agent Rankings: Tight Ends

While the 2022 free-agent class of tight ends lacks a true top-tier name, there are some quality veteran pass-catchers set to test the market. With more and more teams utilizing multiple tight ends regularly, there will be plenty of fantasy ramifications. Here are our 2022 free-agent rankings for the tight end position. Also, make sure you check out the quarterback, running back, and wide receivers. Uzomah TE CIN 29 16 49 493 5 Anthony Firkser TE TEN 27 15 34 291 2 Dalton Schultz – After a breakout 2021 campaign, Schultz is likely to get franchise tagged, but if he were to hit the open market, the 25-year-old veteran could command a salary in the $12-14 million range annually. Schultz’s dynasty value is tied to re-signing with Dallas, but if he were to sign elsewhere, Blake Jarwin would become an interesting name once again. Mike Gesicki – Gesicki’s 111 targets ranked fourth overall and with Miami undergoing another regime change, there’s a good chance the fifth-year tight end will be allowed to test free agency. More of a wide receiver than true inline tight end, Gesicki could benefit from a change of scenery and still has top-5 fantasy potential should he land in a destination with more stable quarterback play. Zach Ertz – Ertz actually had one more target than Gesicki thanks to an uptick in looks after being traded to Arizona, where he averaged 10.75 targets per game in the Cardinals’ last four contests. Although Ertz will turn 32 in December, he is still a potent pass-catching weapon and will have no shortage of suitors in the $6-8 million dollar range annually in a 2-3 year deal. Although his dynasty value is on the decline, Ertz can still be a top-10 redraft option provided he lands with a coach willing to scheme Ertz into the offense. Evan Engram – Understandably, many fantasy pundits are done with Engram after a pair of disappointing seasons, but Engram is still just 27 and could still develop into an above-average receiving option. More reason for optimism: Engram could hardly find worse quarterback play and may still be viewed as a decent late-round streamer this summer. Rob Gronkowski – With word that Tom Brady has retired, we’ve likely seen the final play of Rob Gronkowski’s brilliant NFL career. Gronk indicated that he may still play without Brady, but having already retired once and returned simply to reunite with his long-time signal-caller, it makes sense for him to walk away. 33 in May, Gronkowski has played a full season once since 2011 but could still make an impact as a designated red-zone option should he come back for one final season with a contender, but his days as a fantasy TE1 are in the past. David Njoku – A 2017 first-round selection, Njoku will have the opportunity to test the free-agent waters for the first time but a return to Cleveland is something that is also on the table, particularly if the club parts ways with Austin Hooper. Still just 26 when the 2022 season begins, Njoku had a career-best 13.2 yards per catch average and posted his first 100-yard performance in Week 5. Tyler Conklin – Thrust into the starting lineup after Irv Smith suffered a season-ending knee injury in the summer, Conklin parlayed the unexpected reps into a solid 61/593/3 line. With Smith expected to make a full recovery, Conklin isn’t necessarily expected to return to Minnesota. With limited success in his first three campaigns, Conklin may have to settle for a rotational role. Gerald Everett – Labeled as a popular late-round sleeper last summer, Everett set career-best numbers in catches, yards, and touchdowns but his production was quite similar to when he was splitting reps with Tyler Higbee in Los Angeles. The Seahawks are about to embark on a rebuild, so Everett is unlikely to return, which might be for the best from a fantasy perspective. C.J. Uzomah – Uzomah had his best pro season as the Bengals broke out. With a deep receiving corps, Uzomah will always be used as a secondary option in Cincinnati and could try to capitalize on his success to make a play for more targets elsewhere. However, for fantasy purposes, re-signing with the surging Bengals makes the most sense, but Uzomah will be little more than a week-to-week streamer regardless of his address. Anthony Firkser – Another popular pre-season sleeper, Firkser had a middling season as the Titans rotated tight ends. Firkser had 20 or fewer yards in nine of his 15 games and single-digit yards in five. He’s little more than a fantasy TE3 draftable only in leagues that dole out bonuses for the position. Hayden Hurst could draw attention as a lesser starter or solid rotational option but will be well off the fantasy radar unless he lands in a top-10 offense.
