Manic Monday: Week 12

Social media giveth and social media taketh away. I’m generally amused at how people handle social media on holiday weeks. For some reason, Thanksgiving food takes seems to be a hot topic and 2021 was no different. As a dad, I’m quite familiar with macaroni and cheese. If my son could, he would eat it 300 days a year or more. Granted, it’s not the special side that many families enjoy in a casserole dish during holidays, but I expressed my opinion that mac and cheese wasn’t a great side because of the frequency that we eat it. I want really unique holiday food. Things we don’t eat but once or twice a year that gives these last two months of the calendar that special appeal. Just how I feel….you know….an opinion. Or not. Needless to say, I was quickly ridiculed by a Twitter mob, many of which were people I’ve never interacted with and had no followers in common. Miserable people out seemingly searching ‘mac an cheese’ just so they could go tell strangers why their own opinion was, in fact, wrong. You’d have thought I said Mac and Me deserved the 1988 Oscar over The Last Emperor. I’ve been dealing with this for years so it was no problem, but slightly annoying. On the bright side, I wasn’t about to be one of those people that make a controversial statement on purpose to drum up attention then paint myself as the victim when I received backlash. I’m sure your grandma’s extras super duper special recipe is awesome and clearly, all I know is the stuff in the blue box, but I’m entitled to my opinion, as are you. And, I’m owning what I said: Mac and cheese is just ok. See, I believe in being accountable. Accountability ac·count·a·ble –/əˈkoun(t)əb(ə)l/ (adjective) – (of a person, organization, or institution) required or expected to justify actions or decisions; responsible. The keyword there is responsible. Whether it’s the rare food take or, more commonly, a football opinion, I always take full accountability for what I write or share on social media. It’s kinda half the reason I started writing this series every week. I ALWAYS pinpoint where we were wrong. To me, it’s vital to take responsibility when you’re off. Owning your mistakes can help identify what went wrong in the research and help refine the process. DFS touts have a long history of not taking accountability and only sharing the plays that go right. That’s easy. We’re all wrong, all the time. Just part of the game and what makes this hobby so much fun- trying to navigate the myriad of data to hit the occasional home run. I made plenty of calls in fantasy that didn’t work out too well this week and some of my game picks were just atrocious. I actually picked the Steelers to win and said to take the UNDER 47 in the Packers Rams tilt. That was toast in the third quarter. That was so bad, I’m thinking I should just switch to proper food decisions. Stuffing, by the way, is the correct choice. Where We Were Right Speaking of correct, we did well with Thursday’s second game. Our projections placed Michael Gallup and Hunter Renfrow inside our top-20 wide receivers for the week and that’s precisely where they are entering Monday. Renfrow, in fact, is WR5 in PPR formats. Leonard Fournette was our RB8 in PPR projections. After a four-score game, Fournette wound up posting the top overall fantasy numbers from the entire slate but few sources listed Tampa’s starting running back inside their top-12 backs for the week. It would feel wrong not to talk about the main theme for this week, Mac Jones, who we ranked as our QB15. Jones and the red-hot Patriots continue to get better each and every week, with Jones playing like a seasoned veteran and hitting some impressive throws in each contest. Where We Were Wrong Ugh, what an ugly week for quarterbacks. No signal-caller had posted more QB1 performances this season than Jalen Hurts, who seemed poised to have another stellar outing against a Giants defense that ranked in the bottom-10 against opposing quarterbacks. Hurts was awful, throwing three interceptions and having his worst outing of the season. And Hurts wasn’t the only quarterback we missed on. Cam Newton was even worse, posting an abysmal 23.8% completion percentage and tossing 4(!) picks. Should have known that a guy whose name is Mac spelled backward was going to be a poor choice. Running back wasn’t much better. Normal every-week studs like Christian McCaffrey, Dalvin Cook, David Montgomery, and Nick Chubb topped our projections and all finished far lower than that. CMC and Cook could even be sidelined for multiple weeks after exiting their respective games with injuries. That will shake things up in a major way as the fantasy playoffs approach…but maybe that’s precisely what we need after Week 12. The team will be forced to start Zach Wilson under center… The New Orleans Saints gave Taysom Hill a four-year extension worth $40 to $95 million dependent on what position he plays. Running Backs After a lackluster showing on Thanksgiving, the Dallas Cowboys are considering giving Ezekiel Elliott “time to heal”. Both missing games and seeing a decreased role are options… Elijah Mitchell will be a game-time call for the San Francisco 49ers this week and seems to be trending in the right direction… Jeremy McNichols will be forced to sit this week out for the Tennessee Titans due to a concussion. The team also waived Adrian Peterson… After somewhat of a breakout in Week 11 for the Atlanta Falcons, Qadree Ollison will be forced to sit out this week due to an illness. Cordarrelle Patterson has practiced in a limited capacity this week and is trending in the right direction for Sunday’s game… Aaron Jones is trending towards being a true game-time decision after getting in limited practices this week… D’Andre Swift was forced out of Thursday’s game and has been diagnosed with a sprained shoulder. He is considered day-to-day… The Cleveland Browns have activated Kareem Hunt off of injured reserve and he is expected to play on Sunday Night Football… The Philadelphia Eagles have ruled out Jodan Howard this week… The Buffalo Bills made Zack Moss a healthy scratch on Thursday night… Michael Carter will miss multiple weeks with an ankle sprain… Rashaad Penny is on the wrong side of questionable for the Seattle Seahawks Monday night matchup… The Houston Texans waived Phillip Lindsay this week and the Miami Dolphins claimed him. The team has activated Scotty Miller from IR… Deonte Harris is appealing his three-game suspension handed down to him for a DUI charge… Jamal Agnew injured his hip last week and will miss the rest of the season. Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer has hinted Laviska Shenault could slide into his role now… Chase Claypool is playing through a bad case of turf toe for the Pittsburgh Steelers… DeVante Parker is not yet ready to come off of IR… Calvin Ridley is now eligible to return off the reserve/NFI list, but there is no reason to believe a return is imminent… Courtland Sutton inked a four-year $60.8 million extension with the Denver Broncos this week… Amari Cooper missed Thursday’s game due to concussion protocols and Ceedee Lamb missed due to concussion protocols… The Cleveland Browns have ruled out Anthony Schwartz due to a concussion. Donovan Peoples-Jones is also questionable for this week’s game… Nico Collins is questionable for Week 12… Corey Davis will likely be a game-time call Week 12… Allen Lazard is questionable this week. Tight Ends Darren Waller injured his knee on Thursday but avoided disaster for the Las Vegas Raiders. However, he is expected to miss some time… The New England Patriots have listed both Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith as questionable this week. Both are trending towards playing with Smith being the one more likely to miss the game… Logan Thomas is expected to return this week with Ricky Seals-Jones expected to miss another game… James O’Shaughnessy will make his long-awaited return for Jacksonville this week… Adam Trautman has been placed on IR and will miss 4-6 weeks due to a knee injury… Blake Jarwin, who is already on IR, has been placed on the reserve/Covid list… Adam Shaheen has been ruled out for Week 12… Kyle Rudolph is doubtful for Week 12… Eric Ebron has been placed on IR and his season is over. Defensive Backs Tre’Davious White (CB) Buffalo Bills White was forced out of the game Thursday night with a knee injury. We do not yet have a diagnosis and we don’t like to speculate. However, gauging by the reaction of the player during the game and the team after this seems likely to be a serious injury. If White was to miss anytime it’s about as big a blow as one of the league’s top pass defenses could take. This situation needs to be monitored as the Bills take on the Pats next Sunday. His absence would be a big boost to all opposing wideouts. Darius Slay (CB) Philadelphia Eagles Slay has resumed practicing and appears to be on his way to clearing the concussion protocol before Sunday’s NFC East showdown with the Giants. His availability is a huge boost for the Eagles and a big hit to the Giants’ top receiving option whoever that may be. With all the injuries in their WR corps, it looks like Kenny Golladay may be filling that role this week. Minkah Fitzpatrick (CB) Pittsburgh Steelers
Fantasy Football News & Notes

Here are some of the fantasy-relevant news and notes that fantasy football managers should be aware of heading into Week 11. Quarterbacks Kyler Murray will be a true game-time decision this week for the Arizona Cardinals. After practicing this week he appears to be trending in the right direction… Detroit Lions’ starter Jared Goff is officially listed as doubtful for Week 11. Tim Boyle is expected to get the start in his place… Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule says that Cam Newton will take the first snap this week, but P.J. Walker will also likely play… Despite most of his body being injured, Baker Mayfield will start for the Cleveland Browns this week… Joe Flacco will be the New York Jets’ starter this week despite Zach Wilson’s knee being “structurally okay”… Tua Tagovialoa was named the Miami Dolphins Week 11 starter early in the week and is good to go after a full week of practice… Ben Roethlisberger hopes to start for the Pittsburgh Steelers this week and is preparing as if he’ll be out there. He’s yet to be cleared from the Covid protocols… Taysom Hill has been struggling with a foot injury all week and is very questionable to play his hybrid-QB role for the New Orleans Saints this week. Running Backs Chris Carson will undergo surgery on his neck that will end his season and has long-term concerns for his career. Alex Collins is expected to play and start for the Seattle Seahawks as part of a committee… Green Bay Packers starter Aaron Jones will miss at least one week and possibly two after injuring his ankle last Sunday… Saquon Barkley is fully expected to make his return for the New York Giants on Monday Night Football. Devontae Booker only managed to get in a limited practice on Friday and isn’t a lock to play this week… Alvin Kamara has once again been ruled out this week. Ty Montgomery will be sidelined as well. The Saints are expected to activate Tony Jones from injured reserve… Elijah Mitchell is unlikely to play for the San Francisco 49ers this week after being officially listed as doubtful. JaMycal Hasty is also looking unlikely to play… Latavius Murray is expected to return to the Baltimore Ravens’ lineup this week. His role is unclear, but the team did release Le’Veon Bell… Miles Sanders is very questionable this week and is trending towards being a game-time decision for the Philadelphia Eagles… Jamaal Williams is questionable this week and will likely be a game-time decision. Jermar Jefferson has been ruled out… James Robinson is questionable for the Jacksonville Jaguars Week 11 but is expected to suit up… There is no clarity on whether or not Clyde Edwards-Helaire will be activated by the Kansas City Chiefs this week. We will have to follow his status up until game day… The Tennesee Titans have ruled out Jeremy McNichols this week… Nick Chubb and Demetric Felton have been activated off the reserve/Covid list… Cordarrelle Patterson was unable to suit up for the Atalanta Falcons on Thursday Night Football and his status for next week is now unclear. Wide Receivers Amari Cooper has tested positive for Covid and will miss the Dallas Cowboys Week 11 games as well as their matchup on Thanksgiving… Chase Claypool ended the week off the injury list and looks to be good to go for Sunday… DeAndre Hopkins will miss another game this week and is expected to return after the Cardinals bye… Reports swirled this week that Antonio Brown gave the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a fake vaccination card to avoid Covid protocols and restrictions. Browns’ camp refuted the story, however, this is likely not the last we’ve heard of this. Regardless, he will not play this week due to injury… Donovan Peoples-Jones will be a game-time decision this week and Anthony Schwartz has been ruled out with a concussion… Hollywood Brown is questionable this week with a thigh injury but trending towards playing… Tim Patrick inked a three-year $34.5 million extension with the Denver Broncos this week… Allen Robinson is not expected to suit up for the Chicago Bears this week… Allen Lazard is not expected to play this week and is listed as doubtful… Denzel Mims remains on the Covid list and may not be able to return this week… The Washington Football Team has listed Curtis Samuel as questionable this week. It would be a surprise if he played. At best he will be on a small snap count according to the team. Tight Ends Neither Logan Thomas nor Ricky Seals-Jones will play this week and John Bates is expected to start for Washington… Dallas Goedert signed a monster four-year $59 million extension this week and has cleared the concussion protocol… Rob Gronkowski is expected to return this week… Geoff Swaim has been ruled out with a concussion… The Houston Texans have moved now-former quarterback Jeff Driskel to tight end… Hayden Hurst has been placed on IR… The Jags have activated James O’Shaughnessy from IR. Defensive Backs Richard Sherman (CB) Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sherman injured his calf in pre-game warmups last week and was forced to miss his Week 10 matchup. He was diagnosed with a grade 2 calf strain. Later in the week, he was seen in a walking boot and then placed on injured reserve. He will now miss at least the next three weeks. The Bucs struggled mightily in the secondary early in the season, but signing Sherman had helped steady the ship in recent weeks. This is another him to that secondary and is a definite boost for Daniel Jones and the Giants’ wideouts this week. Patrick Peterson (CB) Minnesota Vikings The Vikings have activated Peterson from the IR this week. He had been sidelined with a hamstring injury and this activates his 21-day window to be placed on the active roster. It’s not definite that he’s playing this week, but it seems to look like it’s heading in that
Fantasy Football Injury Report

Injuries are an unfortunate part of the game and the longer the season goes on, the more impactful those ailments tend to be. With the fantasy playoffs now within sight, it’s as important as ever to stay informed about injuries and to know how to respond. Here are the fantasy-relevant injuries to know about as we get ready to move ahead into Week 11. Week 11 NFL Byes: Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Rams Aaron Jones (RB) Green Bay Packers – Fantasy manager can breathe a sigh of relief. An MRI revealed Jones suffered a “mild” MCL sprain and may only miss a game or two. That means Jones should be back and ready to go for the fantasy playoffs. It also means that A.J. Dillon has top-10 upside in the next week or two and should be inserted into lineups or considered the No. 1 waiver wire priority where available. Alvin Kamara (RB) New Orleans Saints – There hasn’t been much of an update on Kamara’s knee. The injury isn’t considered serious but we should find out more this week if Kamara is able to participate in practice. We’ll have updates as the week progresses. DeAndre Hopkins (WR) Arizona Cardinals – Nuk has now missed two games with a hamstring injury and should be considered very questionable to face the Seahawks. With Arizona holding a Week 12 bye, it might make sense for the Cardinals to hold Hopkins out gain, essentially giving him a month off to get 100% for the playoff push. Saquon Barkley (RB) New York Giants – Giants’ beat writers reported Barkley looked good in practice on Monday and the expectation is that Barkley will be activated ahead of New York’s trip to Tampa Bay. He could be eased back in but once activated, Barkley offers RB1 upside, even in a tough matchup with the Buccaneers’ outstanding run defense. Cordarrelle Patterson (RB) Atlanta Falcons – Patterson was limited to just 15 snaps last week before exiting the game with a sprained ankle. With the Falcons looking at a quick turnaround and hosting New England on Thursday, there is almost zero chance Patterson will play in Week 11. Damien Harris (RB) New England Patriots – Harris still hasn’t cleared the league’s concussion protocol, which is a worrying sign for his overall health. After sitting out Week 10, teammate Rhamondre Stevenson rumbled for 100 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, Harris was still sidelined on the Monday after New England’s victory. After Stevenson’s performance, it wouldn’t be a surprise at all to see the rookie take carries away from Harris, assuming Harris is cleared ahead of Week 11. We’ll keep an eye on this backfield throughout the week and adjust projections accordingly. Clyde Edwards-Helaire (RB) Kansas City Chiefs – Sidelined since getting hurt in Week 5, CEH is trending towards being activated ahead of Kansas City’s Week 11 showdown with Dallas. Even if he returns, Edwards-Helaire could find himself in an even timeshare with Darrel Williams, so approach this backfield with extreme caution until we see how the snaps are divided out. Chris Carson (RB) Seattle Seahawks – A neck injury has caused Caron to miss five games so far. Although Carson returned to limited practice last Wednesday, he was never close to being activated. If you’ve managed to stash Carson on IR this long, be prepared to do so for another week or two. Robert Woods (WR) Los Angeles Rams – Woods tore his ACL in practice Friday and will miss the remainder of the season. He can be dropped in all redraft leagues and having the injury occurred so late into the season could complicate Woods’s status heading into 2022 drafts. Dynasty managers should monitor his health all summer. Kyler Murray (QB) Arizona Cardinals – Kliff Kingsbury is erring on the side of caution with his franchise signal-caller. Murray “could” have played last week but Kingsbury held him back. We’ll keep an eye on this throughout the week and update in Discord when our Vegas insiders have the prognosis. Fantasy managers should make plans to be without Murray once again. Ben Roethlisberger (QB) Pittsburgh Steelers – Sidelined by COVID last week, Roethlisberger will need to test negative twice, 24 hours apart before being cleared for Pittsburgh’s Week 11 trip to face the Chargers. Big Ben reportedly was suffering symptoms and could be very questionable for this game. This is a situation to avoid altogether, as Roethlisberger has been a poor fantasy choice all season and would be a particularly lousy option at less than 100%. Latavius Murray (RB) Baltimore Ravens – The release of Le’Veon Bell indicates that Murray is likely about to return from an ankle injury that has cost him three games. Murray should take over as the main runner but also could be in a virtual 50/50 split with Devonta Freeman. Cole Beasley (WR) Buffalo Bills – Beasley is dealing with a rib injury that has slowed him down over the past couple of weeks. Beasley was limited to just nine snaps in Buffalo’s blowout win in New York. The outcome of that game was never in doubt, which may have led to Beasley’s limited action. We’ll monitor practice reports this week and adjust projections as news is updated. Jermar Jefferson (RB) Detroit Lions – Taking advantage of the absence of Jamaal Williams, Jefferson rushed for 41 yards and a score before being felled by an ankle injury. At this point, Jefferson is projected to miss multiple weeks and Williams is tentatively expected to return this week, so Jefferson can be dropped in redraft formats. Zach Wilson (QB) New York Jets – Wilson is still recovering from a sprained knee but early indications are that the No. 2 overall pick is in-line to get the start after Mike White‘s abysmal showing against Buffalo. Wilson will need to get in some full practices before he can face Miami, otherwise, Joe Flacco could be next man up. Fantasy Football Injury Report

Injuries are an unfortunate part of the game and their impact can destroy a well-constructed fantasy football roster in a hurry. Fortunately, unless you’re in a best-ball league, fantasy managers have the chance to hit the waiver wire and overcome untimely injuries. Let’s break down the fantasy-relevant injuries ahead of Week 8 and how fantasy managers can forge ahead. Week 8 byes: Baltimore Ravens, Las Vegas Raiders Dak Prescott (QB) Dallas Cowboys – According to Prescott, he could have kept playing on the calf injury he suffered in Dallas’ overtime win in Week 6. With a full bye week off to heal, the injury isn’t expected to hinder Prescott at all for the Cowboys’ Week 8 trip to Minnesota. Davante Adams (WR) Green Bay Packers – Not an injury, per se, but Adam was placed on the reserve/COVID list and is highly doubtful for Week 8 due to the short turnaround. Tuesday, Allen Lazard was also placed on the same list, leaving Green Bay dangerously thin at wide receiver and precious little time to add reinforcements. It’s possible Marquez Valdes-Scantling (IR) can be activated ahead of time but for now, plan on Randall Cobb, Amari Rogers, and Equanimeous St. Brown being the Packers’ main pass-catching options. DeAndre Hopkins (WR) Arizona Cardinals – Nuk injured his hamstring during Arizona’s Week 7 win against Houston and exited the game. He’s expected to be in the lineup on Thursday but is unlikely to practice much this week. As long as he’s active, fire up Hopkins as a WR1 in what shapes up to be the rare exciting Thursday Night matchup. Nick Chubb (RB) Cleveland Browns – After missing two games with a calf injury, Nick Chubb is tentatively expected to be back in the lineup this week as the Browns host the Steelers. As long as there are no setbacks, Chubb will be an RB1 but should cede passing-down work to Week 7 waiver wire hero D’Ernest Johnson. Saquon Barkley (RB) New York Giants – Barkley never came particularly close to practicing last week and will need to get multiple practices in before he’s cleared to return from his ankle injury. If Barkley has not returned to practice by Thursday, that’s a pretty good indicator that he’ll miss this week’s trip to Kansas City. Miles Sanders (RB) Philadelphia Eagles – Sanders was carted off the field after hurting his ankle in the first half of Philadelphia’s Week 7 loss. We’re still awaiting MRI results but Sanders is expected to be sidelined for multiple weeks, which makes Kenneth Gainwell a priority waiver wire target. Julio Jones (WR) Tennessee Titans – Jones managed to survive Week 8 without any setbacks on his injured hamstring. In Tennessee’s blowout win, Jones managed to play 42.6% of the team’s offensive snaps. As long as there are no tweaks in practice this week, Jones will be on the WR3 radar this week in Indianapolis. Sterling Shepard (WR) New York Giants – Questionable all week, Shepard tried to practice in pre-game workouts but was quickly precluded from the lineup. Another week of rest should make it more likely that Shepard’s hamstring will heal enough for Shepard to return in Week 8. Teammate Kenny Golladay (knee) is considered less likely to play but is worth monitoring all week. DeVante Parker (WR) Miami Dolphins – Out since hurting his hamstring in Week 4, Parker remains questionable ahead of this week’s unappealing trip to Buffalo. Even if he’s active, Parker is no more than a WR4 against a stout Bills’ secondary. Baker Mayfield (QB) Cleveland Browns – Mayfield also missed Week 7 and is considered highly questionable for Week 8 with a banged-up non-throwing shoulder. Even if Mayfield is active, he would not be a recommended fantasy option at less than 100% health playing against a Pittsburgh defense that has done a good job holding Mayfield in check for most of his career. Zach Wilson (QB) New York Jets – The draft’s No. 2 overall pick sprained his MCL and is expected to miss the next 2-4 weeks. New York’s offense was already struggling and Wilson’s absence will only exasperate those issues. The Jets traded for Joe Flacco and also have Mike White, who relieved Wilson in Week 7’s blowout loss. There’s little reason to start any Jets at this point. Trey Lance (QB) San Francisco 49ers – Lance sat out last week with a knee injury but is expected to return to practice ahead of Week 8. Jimmy Garoppolo struggled last week but has been named the club’s Week 8 starter. Expect the veteran to have a short hook, with Lance possibly factoring in as a gadget/short-yardage weapon. It’s probably only a matter of time before Lance is named San Francisco’s starter, making him an intriguing free-agent add. Tyrod Taylor (QB) Houston Texans – Out since hurting his hamstring in Week 2, Taylor should resume practice the week and will reclaim Houston’s starting job as soon as this week. Taylor will be a big upgrade for all of Houston’s skill position players and can be a solid option in Superflex leagues. Malcolm Brown (RB) Miami Dolphins – Brown started Week 7 but was forced from the game after five snaps with a quad injury. Brown had minimal fantasy value already but is now expected to miss multiple weeks. He can be cut in nearly all formats. Dyami Brown (WR) Washington Football Team – Brown suffered a knee injury last week and is expected to be sidelined for at least one week. Brown is well off the fantasy radar. Will Lutz (PK) New Orleans Saints – Generally one of the league’s better kickers, Lutz never recovered from a groin injury that caused him to open the season on IR. Even though he was activated from that list, Lutz tweeted that he’ll miss the rest of the season. The 2021 NFL season is well underway but it’s not too late to get access to the best help out there!
