NFL Training Camp News & Notes

NFL Training Camp News & Notes The NFL preseason is underway. That means fantasy football is right around the corner. With all 32 teams in camp, myriad stories and developments can impact the 2024 fantasy football rankings. Our NFL Traning Camp News & Notes will catch you up on the latest and how it impacts your upcoming fantasy football draft. Arizona Cardinals • Looks like RB James Conner remains a solid sleeper target. Rookie Trey McBride has not impressed head coach Jonathan Gannon. Emari Demercado has been getting some third-down reps. 2 minutes and 23 seconds of #Cardinals HC Jonathan Gannon telling you to stop drafting Trey Benson at his current ADP (115 on @UnderdogFantasy) pic.twitter.com/9wXw71Bnhv — The Coachspeak Index (@CoachspeakIndex) July 31, 2024 • Greg Dortch has impressed and may be in the lead for WR3 duties ahead of Zay Jones per Bob Manaman. • QB Kyler Murray will not play in the preseason. This is good news. Murray has nothing to prove and only risks getting hurt. Atlanta Falcons • Ray-Ray McCloud has been running ahead of Rondale Moore as Atlanta’s WR3. • Kirk Cousins has an apparent chemistry with Darnell Mooney. • WR Rondale Moore was carted off the field and seen with an air cast on his leg. That generally means a fairly significant injury. This all but locks Ray-Ray McCloud in as Atlanta’s WR3. UPDATE: Moore was placed on season-ending IR with a knee injury. Baltimore Ravens • QB Lamar Jackson returned from an illness. He did not appear to be impacted at all. Seems like a non-issue. • Per The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec “Rasheen Ali is the front-runner to earn the No. 3 role. Aside from a fumble last week that dredged up some of the ball-security issues he had at Marshall, Ali has had a solid camp and has looked comfortable catching balls out of the backfield.” Buffalo Bills •WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling’s first-team reps have dwindled amidst a slow start to training camp, Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic reports. •The Athletic’s Joe Buscaglia reports Khalil Shakir “has been one of the most consistent, dependable players” in Bills training camp. Shakir, entering his third NFL season, finally has a chance to function as an every-down player in Josh Allen’s offense, and has made the most of his training camp opportunities. Shakir’s big plays during camp, Buscaglia said, is “a reminder of how important he is to the scope of the Bills offense in 2024.” Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady said last week that Shakir is “as consistent as they come.” So far, it looks like Shakir, Curtis Samuel, and Keon Coleman are the favorites to run in three-receiver sets for Buffalo this season. Khalil Shakir looked like a superstar on Day 7 of #Bills camp. That and more in my observations: 🏈 Kaiir Elam szn 🏈 2 rookie Olinemen 📈 🏈 Keon Coleman 😎 🏈 LB w/ tough path to 53 making his run 🏈 Safety woes 🏈 Let James 👨🍳https://t.co/W09Iesb7Av — Matt Parrino (@MattParrino) August 1, 2024 Carolina Panthers • Panthers WR Jonathan Mingo has earned praise from those around the first week of training camp, showing improved route-running and a strong grasp of the new offense. Former Panthers WR Steve Smith Sr. also revealed this week that he worked with the former second-round pick over the summer. • Xavier Leggette (day-to-day) is dealing with a foot injury. MRIs came up clean. • Jonathon Brooks won’t play in the preseason and could make his NFL debut in “Week 3 or 4.” • Diontae Johnson, Adam Thielen, and Jonathan Mingo were listed as starters on Carolina’s first official depth chart. Chicago Bears • Caleb Williams has been as good as advertised. • D.J. Moore signed a 4-year, $110 million extension with $82.6 million guaranteed. Cincinnati Bengals • The Athletic’s Paul Dehner suggests Andrei Iosivas is the favorite to win the Bengals’ No. 3 WR job. “The more Iosivas stacks practices, the more you wonder whether he won’t just soak up nearly all of [Tyler] Boyd’s 824 vacated snaps from last season,” Dehner writes. Joe Burrow finds Andrei Iosivas for the touchdown during a grueling, hot 11-on-11 period. Most competitive period of camp so far for the #Bengals pic.twitter.com/MfCMRtIGhv — James Rapien (@JamesRapien) August 1, 2024 • Bengals RB Chase Brown has been taking the majority of first-team snaps at RB for the first few days of camp, per Charlie Clifford. • Zack Moss is listed ahead of Chase Brown on Cincinnati’s depth chart debut. Cleveland Browns • RB D’Onta Foreman was released from a local hospital with a head injury. • Deshaun Watson has looked sharp this offseason but the club has not determined if he’ll play in Cleveland’s preseason opener. Dallas Cowboys • Cowboys RB Rico Dowdle was mentioned as “battling it out” with RB Malik Davis by EVP Stephen Jones. He was highly complimentary of RB Royce Freeman. • The Athletic’s Jon Machota said Cowboys RB Rico Dowdle “has to be the favorite to lead the team in rushing.” Denver Broncos • RB Javonte Williams has resurrected his 2024 fantasy value. “Javonte Williams, who shed 10 pounds this offseason, looks quicker and is another year removed from his ACL surgery. And fifth-round pick Audric Estime has been one of the stars of camp thus far.” https://t.co/dRaktieieW — 32BeatWriters (@32BeatWriters) August 1, 2024 Detroit Lions • Lions WR Jameson Williams had a strong spring and has rolled that momentum into the start of training camp, according to The Athletic’s Colton Pouncy. “Williams is firmly entrenched as one of the guys,” Pouncy writes. “This is the best I’ve seen him look with Jared Goff.” • Daurice Fountain is making a case for the Lions’ WR3 gig. Ben Johnson on WR Jameson Williams: “Things have started to slow down mentally for him. We’ve locked him into a couple spots and as a result, his route tree has grown, it’s developed. And his mind, there’s nothing he can’t do.” 💭: @colton_pouncy | #OnePride pic.twitter.com/U22F2j1WE6 — 𝔗𝔥𝔢

Fantasy Football News & Rankings Update

Fantasy Football News & Rankings Update It’s kind of alarming that Halloween is nearly here and we’re halfway through the 2023 football season. That went by fast. These mid-season weeks are crucial. Also, Week 8 has no bye weeks to contend with. Our Fantasy Football News & Rankings Update gets you prepared for Sunday and Monday’s action. First, check out our Advanced NFL Snap Counts Report to see which player’s usage is trending in the right direction. Secondly, Adam has some spicy takes in his Week 8 Start ‘Em Sit ‘Em article. Finally, DFS legend Shawn Childs does a thorough breakdown of the entire DFS field in his DFS Quarterbacks, Running Backs, Wide Receivers, and Tight End Reports. We are also at the time of year when weather can be a factor. Forecast for Sunday’s Chiefs-Broncos game in Denver calls for a high of 29 degrees, a low of 13, with 6-14 inches of snow, per the National Weather Service. — Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) October 28, 2023 Week 8 Injury News Brocky Purdy has progressed through the NFL’s concussion protocol and should be under center to face the Bengals. We have Purdy as a borderline QB1 in our Week 8 rankings. Brock Purdy appears to be on pace (as long as there’s no setback) to receive full clearance for Sunday’s game. https://t.co/QgXH0OU56g — Matt Maiocco (Threads @maiocconbcs) (@MaioccoNBCS) October 27, 2023 Aaron Jones does not have an injury designated. However, he may be on a ‘snap count’ to protect his hamstring. That keeps Jones as a riskier RB2 this week. Jerome Ford returned to practice Friday. But fantasy managers should be very wary of starting a player so soon after being diagnosed with a high-ankle sprain. #Browns Jerome Ford – TBD. Data favors sitting. Very rare for even mild high ankle to return following week. If active, expect performance dip + workload dip. Likely return Wk 9#Browns Kareem Hunt – Playing. Thigh contusions typically cause low RB performance impact 12/24 — Deepak Chona, MD. SportsMedAnalytics (@SportMDAnalysis) October 28, 2023 Jimmy Garoppolo practiced in full on Friday. He will be back to starting in Detroit and represents an upgrade for all Raiders’ skill position players. Roschon Johnson is back after missing two games with a concussion. However, Johnson now has to contend for touches with an ascending D’Onta Foreman. But, Johnson is the superior pass catcher, so he has an edge in a game that the Bears are 8.5-point underdogs in Los Angeles. David Montgomery did not practice all week. The Lions have a Week 9 bye. Our lofty projections for Jahmyr Gibbs show there’s next to zero chance he will suit up this week. UPDATE: Montgomery is OUT. Josh Palmer was limited to sideline work at Friday’s practice after sitting out Wednesday and Thursday. Palmer is questionable. However, if he plays will have a tantalizing matchup. We will have more in the FullTime Discord on Sunday. Luke Musgrave (ankle) is a game-time decision. Miles Sanders is back, so we lowered Week 8 projections for Chuba Hubbard. At this point, it’s hard to handicap what will happen in Carolina, coming off of a bye with a new play-caller. That makes both Sanders and Hubbard risk/reward RB2/3 options. Kyler Murray is doubtful. Zack Moss missed a pair of practices this week and is looking very iffy for the Saints game. However, if Moss sits, Jonathan Taylor will move into RB1 territory. Juwan Johnson is back after a four-week absence. Justyn Ross has been placed on this Commissioner’s exempt list after an arrest. Subsequently, Ross can be dropped in all formats. Also, for the Chiefs, Justin Watson (elbow) returns. Daniel Carlson (groin) has not practiced all week. The Raiders signed James McCourt to the to fill in if Carlson is ruled out in Detroit. P.J. Walker will start for the Browns. This is a downgrade for all Cleveland pass catchers. Juju Smith-Schuster has no injury designation. His return cools Kendrick Bourne off slightly. Fantasy Football Recap Week 14

Week 14. The most pivotal week of the year. Millions of fantasy football playoff spots were clinched. And sadly, many seasons ended after an unpredictable Sunday slate. The FullTime Fantasy Football Recap Week 14 looks back on the final regular-season week of the season. This Fantasy Football Recap Week 14 will be our final look back at the 2022 season that was. From now on, we look forward with our eye on the prize. Also, as a friendly reminder, there are three NFL games this Saturday, so plan accordingly. DNR Did you leave Evan Engram on your bench to start Tyler Higbee? I hope you didn’t sign a DNR at the hospital. It’s hard not to overthink things with a potential playoff spot on the line. However, the pain from losing that spot can linger. Not just all offseason, but for years. Trust me- I know that all too well. I still get trash-talking texts from my buddy about Natrone Means. But the DNR that impacted us the most in Week 14 was the dreaded “Did Not Return” designation. In particular at the quarterback position. We had all kinds of QBs injured when we needed them to punch our fantasy postseason ticket. Tyler Huntley, already subbing in for the injured Lamar Jackson got hurt early and DNR. Kenny Pickett also DNR with a potential concussion. Then, there are the signal-callers that fan bases wish Do Not Return. Maybe ever again. Looking at you, Derek Carr. Not to mention, this all took place in the same week that Baker Mayfield went from cast off in Carolina to hero in Los Angeles. There is just no way you could ever have predicted this week to play out the way it did. But, that’s what keeps us coming back for more, even if we wished it could all end via DNR. Backfield Breakdown With so few teams employing a workhorse running back, it is essential for us to track how coaches divide their backfield touches. Here are the fantasy opportunities from some of Sunday’s backfields. Opportunities means carries plus targets. Baltimore – J.K. Fantasy Football Recap Week 13

The opening slate of Week 13 was a lot of fun. From a fantasy perspective, it felt like a return to normalcy. The football games were generally good, too. The FullTime Fantasy Football Recap Week 13 looks back at the games to see what they mean moving forward. Hard to believe that the fantasy playoffs are here for many leagues. Our Fantasy Football Recap Week 13 should be able to provide some interesting nuggets to help you advance. QB1 Hurts How about that Jalen Hurts guy? The superstar Philadelphia quarterback produced 392 yards of offense and four more touchdowns en route to QB1 honors for the week. If you took just Hurts’ rushing numbers he would be a top-30 fantasy back. There were some questions about Hurts this summer. I certainly am guilty of questioning his long-term viability. But the former Alabama signal-caller has silenced those critics. But Jalen Hurts wasn’t the only hurts that came out of the quarterback position today. Unfortunately, QB injuries put the hurtin’ on many fantasy lineups in Week 13. Lamar Jackson suffered an early knee injury and was unable to return. After the game, John Harbaugh said Jackson could miss some time but the injury is not season-ending. At least we were the lowest in the entire industry on Jackson versus Denver this week. Later, Jimmy Garoppolo hurt his foot and was carted to the locker room in the first quarter. For a team with a legitimate shot at the Super Bowl, the 49ers have had some bad luck with quarterback injuries. That got me looking at the overall status of the quarterback position heading into the fantasy lineups. By my count, nine of the 28 teams playing this week have different starters playing right now than they opened the season with. As they say, the 18-week regular season is a war of attrition. Especially if you just happen to be taking snaps under center. Backfield Breakdown With so few teams employing a workhorse running back, it is essential for us to track how coaches divide their backfield touches. Here are the fantasy opportunities from some of Sunday’s backfields. Opportunities means carries plus targets. Fantasy Football Recap Week 12

Week 12 is always one of my favorite weeks. By the time Sunday rolled around I was still working on Thanksgiving leftovers. Unfortunately, as you’ll read in the FullTime Fantasy Football Recap Week 12, reheated turkey and stuffing was the only highlight of the early afternoon. Let’s take a look back at what should have been a banner Sunday for more than just my first-ever butter-baked turkey. Which was elite, by the way. Finally a 10 week There were seven games in the early kick window. And, as appealing as some of those matchups were, the scoring certainly didn’t live up to the bill. Maybe all the boys were still feeling the effects of the tryptophan. Heading into the third quarter, only two of the 14 teams active have more than one touchdown. Eight teams had exactly 10 as their score. Now, normally a 10 is a good thing. However, for NFL and fantasy football purposes, it is not. And there were some solid matchups, too. But, it’s usually difficult for teams to overcome poor quarterback play. And that’s precisely what the early slate on Sunday served up. If we’re being fair, I’d rate that turkey I served up Thursday considerably higher than the Week 12 action. Unfortunately, it is all gone now. Just like my chances of winning several of my fantasy matchups after the sluggish start to what should have been a banner week. In an effort to wrap things up positively, the scoring and excitement picked up substantially in the afternoon slate. Which is about as much as we could ask for. Backfield Breakdown With so few teams employing a workhorse running back, it is essential for us to track how coaches divide their backfield touches. Here are the fantasy opportunities from some of Sunday’s backfields. Opportunities means carries plus targets. Fantasy Football Recap Week 11

We’re now 11 weeks into the 2022 season and while this past week was full of drama and defense, it was mostly a low scoring fantasy week. Let’s look back on Sunday with the FullTime Fantasy Fantasy Football Recap Week 11 and see what we can learn from another Sunday of NFL action. Also, we’ll take an early peak at Week 12. Where’s the Beef? And by beef I mean points? That opening slate of games was brutal. When the Redzone Channel went to the ‘witching hour’ of the fourth quarter, eight of the 16 teams had one TD or less. Six of the squads had zero. And the weather wasn’t even a factor. It was just a poor offensive showing all around. The Patriots-Jets contest set the game back 30 years. There wasn’t even an offensive touchdown mustered at all. New England got the first punt return TD of the entire season for the only touchdown of the day. Zach Wilson was particularly brutal. Not that Jets fans expected anything else. The last time New York defeated New England in regulation, Wilson was in seventh grade. Of course, Wilson wasn’t the only signal-caller who struggled. Eight of the 16 QBs who started at 1 ET failed to account for even one touchdown pass. This is one of those weeks where the guy in your league who forgot to change his lineup wins with his running back on bye. Where your first-place eliminator team gets knocked out due to one brutal week. On the bright side, I made some bad DFS calls, too. However, the scoring was so low that I may end up with a profitable week. That will be a first with a lineup with more ice crystals that fire emojis. This seems like the lowest scoring NFL DFS slate ever. — JeffElJefe (@JeffKCollins) November 20, 2022 Week 11 was just that kind of slate. Fantasy Football Recap Week 10

We’re now 10 weeks into the 2022 season and we may have just had the best Sunday yet. This week’s slate offered up some fascinating games with plenty of scoring and back-and-forth action. Our Fantasy Football Recap Week 10 looks back at all the drama. Let’s look back on Sunday with the FullTime Fantasy Fantasy Football Recap Week 10 and see what we can learn from another Sunday of NFL action. Don’t Count Your Chickens That Buffalo versus Minnesota game was wild. First, we saw an unbelievable catch by Justin Jefferson. Just an amazing one-handed snag on a desperation throw to keep a drive alive. A few plays later, Jefferson seemingly caught a touchdown, which led to celebrations. Including me, where I sent a troll text to my group text thread. See, I have Jefferson in my lineup and was talking trash. Oops. The play was, rightfully, overturned and the Vikings were ultimately stopped short to end the game. Or at least seemingly. All the Bills had to do was take a safety or fall forward. They had a 99% chance of winning. Instead, Josh Allen never handled the snap, and the Vikings recovered the botched hand-off in the end-zone. But, it STILL wasn’t over. Buffalo drove down the field to send it into overtime. Now, Minnesota still emerged victorious but it drove home the point. Never start celebrating until it is over. But, as a natural observer, that was a highly-entertaining contest. Backfield Breakdown With so few teams employing a workhorse running back, it is essential for us to track how coaches divide their backfield touches. Here are the fantasy opportunities from some of Sunday’s backfields. Opportunities means carries plus targets. Fantasy Football Recap Week 9

The weather isn’t the only thing cooling off. Well, at least it felt that way on Sunday. After a bonkers Week 8, our Fantasy Football Recap Week 9 seems to be lagging behind in one important category. Touchdowns. And this slate appeared to have so much potential, too. But that promise was undermined by uncharacteristic turnovers and poor quarterback play. Ultimately, just another Sunday on the calendar. Albeit another odd one is this wild 2022 campaign. Let’s look back on Sunday with our Fantasy Football Recap Week 9 and see what we can learn from another challenging Sunday. Leveled Up As much as I love football, the Houston Astros are my team. Ever since I was very young. Well, the Stros and Oilers, but that didn’t work out. However, being a fan of those teams in the 80s and 90s was integral to me growing up paranoid and insecure about ever seeing a championship. I swear no team in the history of sports was as brutal to their home fan base as those Oilers. Love Ya Blue, but that franchise always came up short. 35-3 3rd quarter leads, 12-game winning streaks, sideline fisticuffs from coaches. No matter what, they always blew it. And the Astros broke plenty of hearts along the way. 80, 86, 98, 2005..it was brutal. Speaking of 2005, the Longhorns brought what was my personal favorite sports moment that year. Up until 2017, at least. But, they needed to see that. Good or bad. So when I prepared to take the very risky approach of watching the 2022 World Series Game 6 potential championship clincher with my fiance and her kids I took a risk. They’ve never seen me get really emotional. And good or bad, that was going to happen Saturday. Generally, I’m still paranoid when it comes to blowing leads in the biggest moments. Something about the past… However, I was oddly optimistic all day. And my Houston Astros did it. It was a great moment for my future family. Also, I make no apologies for being obnoxious about repping the “cheaters.” I believe I’ve earned it after decades of heartbreak. Backfield Breakdown With so few teams employing a workhorse running back, it is essential for us to track how coaches divide their backfield touches. Here are the fantasy opportunities from some of Sunday’s backfields. Opportunities means carries plus targets. Dillon 49 snaps, 14 opp.; Aaron Jones 30 snaps, 11 opp. Miami – Jeff Wilson 28 snaps, 12 opp.; Raheem Mostert 26 snaps, 10 opp. New York Jets – Michael Carter 31 snaps, 13 opp.; James Robinson 25 snaps, 15 opp. Washington – Antonio Gibson 36 snaps, 14 opp.; Brian Robinson 28 snaps, 15 opp. Week 9 Preview Week 10 byes: Baltimore, Cincinnati, New England, New York Jets Lines courtesy Draftkings Atlanta at Carolina (+2) Houston at New York Giants (-6) Detroit at Chicago (-2) Seattle at Tampa Bay (-1) Jacksonville at Kansas City (-9.5) Cleveland at Miami (-4) New Orleans at Pittsburgh (+2.5) Minnesota at Buffalo (-7.5) Denver at Tennessee (-2) Indianapolis at Las Vegas (-4.5) Arizona at Los Angeles Rams (-4) Dallas at Green Bay (+4.5) Los Angeles Chargers at San Francisco (-4) Washington at Philadelphia (-10.5) The 2022 NFL season is well underway but it’s not too late to get access to the best help out there! Fantasy Football Recap Week 8

After a one-week hiatus, the Fantasy Football Recap Week 8 is back. Speaking of returning from a layoff, welcome back to the fray offensive production! Week 8 had some massive fantasy performances and even Kyle Pitts managed to score a touchdown. In the opening slate of Sunday action, the OVER went 5-2. Also, home teams were 6-1 straight up and 5-2 against the spread. Not only did it feel like there was more action in Week 8, but the initial numbers prove it. Conversely, it was an exciting end to the second month of the NFL season. And, it was a great way to cap off what was an exhausting week. Welcome Back As the Welcome Back Kotter theme song plays in my head, I’m still reeling from a week of travel. I was out of town from very early Monday and had a busy week of presentations and data. I’ll admit, I ate well and enjoyed some adult treats but it was a difficult week for my routine. After seven weeks of the same weekly process centering around football, I was a bit rattled ahead of Week 8. Don’t get me wrong- we were in good hands here at FullTime Fantasy. My partner Billy Muzio stepped up and took care of the waiver wire. The Godfather himself, Scott Atkins also outworked the Sweathogs. Of course, I was still involved in the process. I just had to pull some late-night shifts and do more behind-the-scenes labor than usual. Admittedly, I was in a bit of a brain fog toward the latter part of the week. Hundreds of miles of travel and little sack time will do that. But it’s good to be back to that normal routine. Who’d have thought they’d need ya? Back here where we need ya.
