Dongers Club 2019 Preview: Attacking Frauds

Batting Second … Attacking Fraud Players Pitchers in MLB DFS Welcome to the #2 hole in the Dongers Club 2019 Season Preview, where we dig into identifying, and attacking Fraud Players and how to avoid them as traps in DFS.  So let’s first recap what the definition of a fraud is in the context of what I’m saying here …   Fraud (noun) … a person or thing intended to deceive others, typically by unjustifiably claiming or being credited with accomplishments or qualities. THOSE NEW SHINY PITCHING FRAUDS This is exactly the description that comes to mind when we get into the day-to-day routine of looking at who’s Pitching and who’s batting where and in what situation for the purposes of DFS analysis.  Suddenly we will find ourselves in Mid May or early June and not only are certain players 40% owned but they are being referenced as these new found elite talents that are going to be future super-stars in the league. There is this fascination among DFS analysts to be “first” much like reporters and insiders in the news cycle want to be the first one with a story to get the credit, everyone in DFS suddenly thinks that they are the smartest person in the room if they can find some young player at value and hit them before the whole world is on top of them.  With all of that we get what I call the perfect DFS shit storm and a player like Caleb Ferguson is 60% owned in cash games making his major league debut on the road. Ferguson made his first start on Wednesday, June 6th at Pittsburgh.  He lasted 1 2/3 Innings on his way to giving up 4 ER off 2 hits, 3 walks and striking out only 3 on 57 pitches.  All of this for $7,400 on DraftKings.  Ferguson would go on to make two more starts for the Dodgers going 4 IP against the Rangers and then 5 IP against the Giants (both at home).  In neither contest did he A:  Win,  B: Strikeout more than 3 batters or C:  Help anyone win a damn thing in DFS.  Ferguson moved into the bullpen for the Dodgers for the rest of the year where he managed to appear in a total of 29 games and bring his ERA down to 3.49 while posting a nice 10+ K/9 ratio and gradually settling into a nice middle relief bullpen arm for the Dodgers on their way to another World Series appearance. But Ferguson is the epitome of a DFS Fraud.  If you played DFS on that day and poked around the MLB DFS Industry you likely heard insane claims such as “This kid is a future star”, or “he has had serviceable numbers in the minors so far this season” or my favorite “I researched this kid all day, he did a great job limiting his walks in the minors and he’s going to be a future All-Star.” ……..  It’s no shocker that the folks who were on Ferguson quickly shifted their attention to hyping up their NFL product or some other excuse as to why they couldn’t provide MLB analysis any further for the season.  Picks like Ferguson are the lazy approach to picking players. Now, I know what you are thinking.  Am I simply bashing every new player?  At some point we have to get on these guys before their prices catch up to the skill set, no?   Absolutely we do, and without looking into the Caleb Ferguson’s of the world we wouldn’t trust guys like Walker Buehler, Joey Lucchesi, Trevor Richards, Andrew Suarez, Ryan Yarborough, Domingo German, Shane Bieber, Brad Keller, etc…   All arms who at some point during the 2018 season became new faces to use and trust. So what’s the difference?  How do we try to identify someone like Ferguson or Jacob Faria — who was also hyped up like he was the next coming of Jesus at times in 2017 — but not miss out on the likes of Joey Lucchesi or Trevor Richards?   Is Ryan Borucki good?  What about Jalen Beeks? There’s a few check boxes that you should be trying to check when you hear a new name pop up and most apply to both pitchers and hitters. 1)  Where did this prospect rank at the beginning of the season? Below are where some notable pitchers ranked at the beginning of the 2018 season, as per Baseball America, these guys were all in the Top 100… 11.  Michael Kopech 13.  Walker Buehler 27.  Mike Soroka 53.  Jack Flaherty 61.  Brandon Woodruff 90.  Tyler Mahle But out of 30 teams, there’s a good chance that one teams top prospect may not find their way into the Top 100 of a particular scouts list, and so we want to dig into the actual teams farm system to find out what the future path of the player coming up is.  Domingo German was one of the Yankees better pitching prospects who was ready to come up last year.  Shane Bieber was on record as having been labeled to be groomed as the next Corey Kluber and Trevor Richards although ranked as low as 18 even within the Marlins farm system had quickly been ascending up the ranks. The point here is that, we want to know about these players BEFORE they come up to the big leagues.  More often than not you are going to get burned by a new pitcher who has no pedigree or hype associated with them before they arrive in the big leagues and you certainly do not need to take a risk on chalky young starting pitchers.  They flop way more than they succeed.  Kerry Wood aint walking through those doors. There are plenty of other reasons these guys turn into Frauds however if they do come up and appear to stick with the big leagues. 2) The Popular Organization Hype Simply put.  If the player is on the Yankees, Dodgers, Red Sox, Cardinals, Cubs

Dongers Club – Playoffs 10/5

What a fantastic overcast October day here on the east coast and we have four amazing baseball games starting at 2:05 EST today. Wanna play single game? Wanna play some bets? Wanna rock a parlay? How about a nice 4 game MLB DFS playoff slate?   Cleveland vs Houston At the start of the MLB season I said Indians and Dodgers for the World Series.  Mid season I said Indians and Diamondbacks and now at the start of the playoffs I have bets riding on Indians and Brewers.   So just for full disclosure those are my picks I am riding heavy and the American League playoffs have shaped up exactly how I thought they would with Cleveland opening at Houston today.  Both AL series should really be fantastic short 5 game series and while part of me wants them to be 7 game sets, the tense feeling of really good teams having to battle it out in a short 5 game series is fantastic. Neither team has an edge in Starting Pitching, but lets just say the Indians starters have done well against the Houston Astros.  Kluber and Bauer in paticular with Carrasco in between in game two on the road where I think he pitches fantastic. Today we have Kluber vs Verlander and JV has always had Indians demons and I expect those to be tamed a little bit today but will still have Indians exposure.  This game is one of two games in a dome and thus has no weather or shadows concerns. BET:  Indians & OVER 6.5 DFS BATS:   Jose Ramirez, Francisco Lindor, Michael Brantley, Alex Bregman VALUE BAT:   Yonder Alonso DFS PITCHER:   Kluber   Colorado vs Milwaukee What can be said about Christian Yelich?  The guy is carrying this team and is virtually unstoppable right now.  Those of us who paid attention during the season know that Yelich is just as good (if not better) against LHP than he is vs RHP.  So facing a lefty in Tyler Anderson today is no reason to think we can suddenly jump off his hot streak.  The only reason to consider a fade though is his price and that we have four games to get other options from.  But good luck with that. My initial thought was Colorado would split here and they would split in Colorado as well and the Brewers would win game five.  But I really am having doubts about the Rockies bullpen holding up long enough to make that happen.  This game has sneaky offense in it on both sides.   BET:  BREWERS & OVER 8 DFS BATS:  Yelich, DJ LeMahieu, Ryan Braun…  Oh yes.  Braun is going f’n yard today….   Carlos Gonzalez, Jesus Aguilar DFS PITCHER:   None — outside of being cute with Josh Hader as a SP2   New York Yankees vs Boston Hey guys, did you hear the Yankees and Red Sox are playing in the playoffs for the first time since 2004? Imagine needing J.A. Happ to save your season.  Well, that’s what the Yankees have today and Happ is going to be the guy to lock things down for the Yankees.  Couple things we made a FUCK TON of money on this year with Boston…   First, they were very inconsistent against lefties and yes I will touch on Steve Pearce in a second as he is the outlier.  Second, they were VERY inconsistent offensively whenever Chris Sale pitched.   Third, when the temps in Fenway are below 65 it plays under normally.  Well, this is a 7.5 total, so you know already where I am leaning there but in the playoffs with these teams we can see some big late inning shots and who better to do that than Yankee killer Steve Pearce who has torched the Yanks.   Boston is the better team.  The Yankees are coming in with mojo, the Yankees will win tonight but not the series. BETS:   Yankees & UNDER 7.5 DFS BATS:   Didi, Pearce DFS VALUE BAT:   Sanchez (too cheap on FD) DFS PITCHERS:  J.A. Happ (When Aaron Boone pulls him in the 6th inning with a 1 hitter I will scream)   Atlanta vs LA Dodgers Boy was I dead wrong on the Braves vs Ryu yesterday.  They came in cold and looked completely overmatched against Ryu.  Today they draw Kershaw.  Congrats boys.   But we do have some history of Kershaw being a little “bad” in the playoffs — or thats what the general public likes to think.  It’s a bit overblown as he usually is VERY good until about the 6th-7th inning and given how he is no longer that 8-9 inning guy I’m not expecting him to get stretched too deep tonight.  LA has a luxury of Buehler waiting in the wings and so they can go to their bullpen when ready today.  This is a tough spot for the Braves as they roll Anibal Sanchez out but he did well vs LA earlier this year and has been righting the ship for them all season when they need it.  I think this game plays under.   BETS:  Dodgers & UNDER 7 DFS BATS:   Machado, Flowers, Puig DFS VALUE BAT:   Flowers DFS PITCHERS:   Kershaw & Sanchez     OVERALL DFS RANKINGS PITCHERS Corey Kluber … Engage Klubot playoff mode. Clayton Kershaw … Kershaw to me is the safer play on FD than Happ as they are close in price, but I’ll be damned if I dont wanna use Tyler Flowers even against him. J.A. Happ … Similar to Kershaw there is ONE bat that scares me here and that’s Pearce.  But I think Happ pitches well and warrants usage at low ownership. STACKS Milwaukee … This feels like a Lorenzo Cain and Ryan Braun game. Cleveland … Cleveland is the sleeping giant ready to unleash on the Astros. Colorado … Some nice value spots the lefites could get to Chacin early in this one.   POSITIONAL TARGETS C:  Flowers, Sanchez 1B:   Pearce, Aguilar, Freeman, Alonso 2B:   LeMahieu, Ramirez 3B:   Camargo, Nunez, Bregman Third

Dongers Club: Friday 9/28

For those still playing MLB this weekend I tip my hat to you.  I am personally saving up for the MLB playoffs as I trust those games slightly more, but there’s still some good plays tonight and tomorrow — DO. NOT. PLAY. SUNDAY!!   PITCHING Hyun-Jin Ryu … I personally don’t care much for Ryu and he is facing MadBum which really causes some pause for using him.  The Dodgers need to keep winning and the Giants purposely moved MadBum to tonight to face them to help ruin their chances of winning the division.  Love the move Giants, but Ryu is in a good spot in a nice pitchers park. Tyler Glasnow … Glasnow has the K upside of facing Toronto at home.  He’s the top mid range option for me today on FanDuel Zach Davies … Milwaukee needs to keep winning and has a cake walk matchup with the Tigers tonight. Mike Foltynewicz … Folty to me is sneaky today.  The Phillies are returning home from Coors field and strike out a ton and Folty’s always pitched fantastic in Philly.  The question is how long do they stretch him out tonight with the playoffs coming up and him being their likely top arm.   OFFENSE STACKS HOUSTON … Houston in Camden Yards any other time would be a lock button.  Having nothing to play for though I expected we would get a B-team today.   We’re not!   Altuve, Correa, Reddick are all in and are all fantastic plays today. MILWAUKEE … The Brewers should play at home w/ the roof closed today and how we fade them vs J.Zimm?   TOP PLAYS CATCHER JT Realmuto Brian McCann Chris Iannetta FIRST BASE Jesus Aguilar Freddie Freeman Matt Olson SECOND BASE Travis Shaw Jose Altuve Brandon Lowe Corban Joseph THIRD BASE Alex Bregman SHORTSTOP Trea Turner Carlos Correa Nick Ahmed Jean Segura OUTFIELD – Tier 1 Christian Yelich Josh Reddick Lorenzo Cain David Dahl OUTFIELD – Tier 2 Nick Markakis Marwin Gonzalez Andrew McCutchen Thomas Pham OUTFIELD – Tier 3 Hunter Renfroe Odubel Herrera Lewis Brinson Daniel Palka   THE DONGERS CLUB Jesus Aguilar – 1B – Chairman Josh Reddick – OF Alex Bregman – 3B Trea Turner – SS David Dahl – OF Jose Altuve – 2B Andrew McCutchen – OF Brian McCann – C BONUS …………………… Freddie Freeman – 1B

WEATHER Six game main slate tonight with the Astros and the Orioles having a good chance of being PPD in a game that means nothing to either team and Houston is coming off clinching so if they actually do play I would still fade Houston’s star players (likely to rest anyways).   PITCHING Julio Teheran faces off against the Mets.  We have always rode Julio against the Mets and that history aside he is the top play on the board tonight given weather issues for Gerrit Cole in Baltimore. Marco Gonzales is your SP2 tonight on DraftKings at home against the Rangers.   I really don’t see why we’re playing much tonight and through the weekend (wait for the playoffs) but this is a fairly clear cut pitching night in my mind on DK.   TOP STACKS ROYALS … Assuming the Astros/Orioles game is washed out the best team offensively right now is …. Yes, the Royals!   Facing off against Josh Tomlin at home the Royals kids likely will continue to hit and be pesky.  Whit, Mondesi and O’Hearn lead the way. TWINS / TIGERS … I like neither pitcher here tonight and both are lefties in a park that plays well to RH power hitters in my mind.  Sadly the Twins don’t have much pop, but we can try to go back to the Tyler Austin well again here today.  Castellanos is your top pay up OF today against a lefty.   HITTERS TO TARGET CATCHERS Salvador Perez … You want BvP?  Okay.  How is 20 for 40 lifetime?  Good?  Alright.  Thanks. Dongers Club – Wed 9/26

WEATHER Atlanta @ Mets, Baltimore @ Boston have some slight rain issues.   Should hopefully play   PITCHING STUDS Jacob deGrom … Tonight’s high end ace is deGrom at home against Atlanta.  He’s done fantastic vs the Braves and at home is one of the best plays all year long despite never getting the damn win.  There’s a few mid range options that have me off him on FD today but on DK where we’re taking two guys I’d strongly consider him.   MID RANGE Sean Newcomb … How is he only 8100 on DK against the Mets who suck vs Lefties?  How?  I don’t care if he is facing deGrom, this is your DK pivot tonight off deGrom. Andrew Heaney … Lefty at home vs Rangers.  They’ve mailed it in.  Sign me up as my #1 play on FD today. Jake Odorizzi … Ole Eggs has pitched very well in his last two starts and faces a Tigers team without any one player on fire.  Sub 60 degrees in Target field I think the Twins get some runs on Boyd tonight to give him run support.   LONGSHOT / VALUE SP2 Jimmy Yacabonis … Many will shy away because of the matchup with Boston, but the Red Sox are mailing it in tonight in the second game of the DH and Yacabonis has pitched enough so far that the Orioles will let him go deep enough at 4.4k on DK to return enough value if he is pitching well. Luis Perdomo … I hate him, but the Giants have ZERO lefties and thats what should destroy him.  Pending the Giants lineup he is in play (and chalk).   STACKS ARIZONA … The Diamondbacks pounded the Stripper earlier this season and while the names Ketel Marte and Socrates Brito might not jump off the page at you, understand that Marte has been really good lately and has nice speed at the top of the order and Brito …. Well, Brito sucks but he’s batting between Goldy and Pollock and for crying out loud, he is a philospher! TWINS … Boyd struggles on the road, and good park to pick on a lefty pitcher in….   Polanco, Grossman, Austin CARDS … Ozuna, Carpenter, Wong ATHLETICS … They own King Felix, but beware, they’re clinched and this is could likely be Felix’ last start as a Mariner in Safeco.     CATCHERS Yasmani Grandal – Former P/C narrative & Chase Field Catcher Narrative.  Might rest today though Tyler Flowers Yadi Molina FIRST BASE Tyler Austin Paul Goldschmidt Anthony Rizzo SECOND BASE DJ LeMahieu Travis Shaw Logan Forsythe THIRD BASE Eduardo Escobar Matt Carpenter Wil Myers SHORTSTOP Ketel Marte Jorge Polanco Andrelton Simmons OUTFIELD – Tier 1 Charlie Blackmon David Peralta Marcell Ozuna Christian Yelich OUTFIELD – Tier 2 David Dahl Joc Pederson Daniel Palka Odubel Herrera OUTFIELD – Tier 3 Robbie Grossman John Field Jackie Bradley Jr Nick Martini Socrates   THE DONGERS CLUB Tyler Austin – 1B Tyler Flowers – C DJ LeMahieu – 2B David Peralta – OF Simba – SS Wil Myers – 3B Socrates Brito – OF Odubel Herrera – OF BONUS ………………….. WEATHER Orioles @ Red Sox – Likely PPD risk Braves @ Mets – Also PPD risk   PITCHING As we saw last night with the Indians lineup some value can really open up this time of year as teams roll out various lineups.  Keep an eye on Oakland who clinched yesterday and could rest today, although they’re still in the hunt for home field in the wild card game. Elite Arms:   Max Scherzer, Trevor Bauer, Walker Buehler, Noah Syndergaard, Luis Severino There are three really good arms at the top but there’s slight concern with them all.   Buehler is facing a D’Backs team in Chase Field that we have no idea who is gonna play but despite a key veterans maybe resting they’re still a potent offense in a good ballpark.   Bauer is likely limited again in how deep he goes and there are some rain issues possibly early in this game, but his 8200 price on FD is very tempting.  Max on the other hand is just too expensive for me on FD where I don’t get the relief of a cheap SP2.   Thor has rain issues but he is my favorite of these four tonight for upside @ lower ownership. Max Scherzer (DK) … Prefer him on DK because of the pricing and being able to pair him with a cheap SP2. Noah Syndergaard (Rain) … If this game gets in I like him a ton more than Max tonight. Luis Severino … I expect he is the chalk play.  Eat him at your own risk.  These Rays are pesky. MID Range:   David Price, Josh James, Matt Shoemaker, Touki Toussaint, Chris Stratton After Josh James there’s absolutely NOTHING about this tier that is enticing today.  Touki as a play on FD isn’t the worst, but he has rain concerns.  Price likely gets washed out and Shoemaker/Stratton are just below average pitchers who are facing bad teams in pitchers ballparks.  That’s likely where you want to go but don’t expect gems. Josh James … The best and really ONLY option I would force in this tier today.  Likely not going more than 5-6 IP but has looked really good for Houston. Low Range:   Mike Leake This is mostly pending how the Athletics lineup looks today, but Leake at home will certainly be someone that throws 90-100 pitches if he is doing well, so we dont have to worry about a quick hook for being young or on a pitch count limit. Mike Leake .. SP2 on DK.   STACK OFFENSE Try to avoid going full stacks these days.  Not a ton of teams dropping 8+ runs with ease. LA Dodgers … Good home run team in a hitters park with the roof open against the worst arm (Koch) going tonight.  Expect Joc and Bellinger to be chalk and do well. ST LOUIS … I expect this game to have some runs in it and be a close game with offense on both sides.  The Cards will be able to put the ball in play and draw walks against Gio tonight and for that reason I would consider stacking them any combo 1-5. PHILLIES … It’s cooler temps in Coors so we don’t have to force it, but there’s limited other good spots tonight.  Phils will see a little Chad Bettis but that’s enough to get Willie Mays Hayes (Odubel Herrera) and Rhys Hoskins going. POSITIONAL PLAYS CATCHER Yasmani Grandal Wilson Ramos Yadier Molina FIRST BASE Max Muncy Justin Bour — Only 3100 on FD in Coors.  C’mon man. Saturday Dongers Club – 9/22

PITCHING Justin Verlander … Despite being very expensive he owns the Angels and should deliver a good game tonight.  Top arm to pay up for Jose Urena … Shockingly I am not high on Urena, but of the mid range options a guy pitching in Miami on a Saturday vs the Reds is worth considerationon. Lucas Giolito … I think this game is the UNDER play of the day.  Gio’s been good in the second half and has his boy Kevan Smith catching   STACKS ARIZONA … Right back to the roof which came up short last night…   Love the Rockies side as well — play DeScalso and Desmond BOSTON … Boston and Cleveland should have another tight game today athe Boston lineup looks solid.  I like the righties as well here but it’s mostly the JD-Xander-Moreland part of the lineup that should do damage.   CATCHERS Kevan Smith Yasmani Grandal FIRST BASE Paul Goldschmidt Mitch Moreland Edwin Encarnacion Ian Desmond SECOND BASE Daniel Descalso Travis Shaw DJ LeMahieu THIRD BASE Nolan Arenado Eduardo Escobar Jurickson Profar SHORTSTOP Xander Bogaerts Brock Holt Freddy Galvis – Value play on DK OUTFIELD – Tier 1 George Springer David Peralta Cody Bellinger Marwin Gonzalez OUTFIELD – Tier 2 Andrew Benintendi JD Martinez Yasiel Puig Scott Schebler OUTFIELD – Tier 3 Jon Jay Tony Kemp Marwin Gonzalez Mason Williams   DONGERS CLUB George Springer – OF – Chairman Paul Goldschmidt – 1B Xander Bogaerts – SS Cody Bellinger – OF Andrew Benintendi – OF Kevan Smith – C Daniel Descalso – 2B Nolan – 3B BONUS ……………….. The Dongers Club – Thu 9/20

Seven game main slate tonight and some smaller contests on the site as it’s now NFL season and they want that Thu-Mon action from you.   Still worth jumping into tonight to clean up some MLB contests.  There’s no major weather issues to speak of tonight so let’s go ahead and dive into the slate.   PITCHING Studs Max Scherzer is above everyone else by a country mile tonight at home against the NY Mets.  He is 13,000! on Dk so that’s a severely steep price but there have been a ton of value lineups out there lately and so we should continue to trust that the underpriced bats will come through for us to help pay for pitching and tonight Max should give us a typical Max quality start. Masahiro Tanaka has had some great games vs Boston and the weather isnt an issue in New York tonight.  Rostering pitchers between Sox-Yanks is always something I try to avoid, but I feel Tanaka pitches well today. Mid Range Jorge Lopez shocked everyone two starts ago when he took a perfect game into the 9th against the Twins only to see it fall apart.  He is now two starts removed from that game and going into Comerica Park facing a Tigers lineup with very little power in it.  Lopez to me would only be a target on FanDuel unless you want to pair him with Gausman on DK but I would rather take the sure thing with Scherzer on DK. Kevin Gausman is likely the trendy mid-range play tonight.  The Phillies present a good strikeout matchup for Gausman, however I personally am fearful of the matchup today.  Philly is out of the playoff picture but is still a dangerous team for me to pick on. Value Arms Cody Reed is someone who’s strikeout upside is tempting to me and I have been on him in prior starts this year.  He is not someone likely to go deep into the game but specific to having a Max Scherzer lineup on DK, you will need to find a cheap value arm.  Other options are Vargas and Jeff Brigham but Reed to me is the better pivot off those other cheap value plays today in Miami.   TOP STACKS INDIANS … are going off tonight.  The Kipnis walk off homer feels like a major jolt for a team who was snoozing into the playoffs.  Bauer is back tomorrow for them and with James Shields on the mound I feel the Tribe will blitz him early and blow away Chicago tonight. BRAVES … I rarely trust Vinnie Velasquez and going into Atlanta?   Yikes. VALUE TEAMS RAYS ROYALS   TOP HITTERS CATCHER Wilson Ramos Gary Sanchez Tucker Barnhardt FIRST BASE Yonder Alonso Freddie Freeman … Mostly if going all in with the Braves, I prefer Alonso today. Carlos Santana SECOND BASE Whit Merrifield … Has always done very well vs Boyd Jose Ramirez Ozzie THIRD BASE – This is a good position tonight in my mind.  Rendon and Devers have nice HR upside here and Sanchez/Wendle should be near the top of the order for teams I like to be sneaky on the road.
