Scouting The NBA – 11/30/17

Plays of the Day Value: Montrezl Harrell is slated to step in for Blake Griffin and he draws a decent matchup tonight against the struggling Jazz. Sam Dekker is another candidate to soak up minutes with Blake, Danilo Gallinari and Patrick Beverley all ruled out for the Clippers. Fade: Kevin Love is coming off a big game but he’s been far too inconsistent to ride with in cash games tonight. The Cavs are playing their third game in four nights and will be on the road in Atlanta. Point Guards Kyrie Irving – (8,400 DK/8,200 FD) Kyrie continues to control the offense as the primary scorer on a Celtics team full of two-way role players and he could pile up points in a matchup against a team that gives up the sixth-most PPG (23.11) to opposing PGs while allowing the second-highest pace of play to that position this year. This is the second half of a B2B set for Philly and the Sixers will be without Joel Embiid. In their one game on 0 days rest this season, the 76ers lost 128-94, but this divisional tilt should stay closer while still providing good box score results. Dennis Schroder – (7,500 DK/7,400 FD) Schroder is a boom-bust option worth considering in GPP formats tonight against what should be a tired Cavs team. Cleveland’s playing its third game over the last four nights and has been notably thin at PG all season, coughing up the second-most APG (9.9) to the position and struggling overall with the second-worst defensive rating in the NBA. Schroder’s seen a rise in assist rate (37.4%) and usage rate (29.8%) with the Hawks moving on from Paul Millsap this year and he’ll do his best to keep Atlanta competitive at home tonight. Potential Value Jerryd Bayless – (3,400 DK/3,700 FD) Bayless should start tonight with T.J. McConnell (shoulder) looking unlikely to suit up. Longshot Austin Rivers – (5,500 DK/6,000 FD) Rivers is one of the few healthy bodies left available for the Clippers and that forces his father to give him extended run. Shooting Guards Donovan Mitchell – (6,900 DK/6,800 FD) Mitchell continued to stand out as the best offensive player on the Jazz by far. He’s rocking a 28 percent usage rate and his poor FG shooting (.383%) is somewhat irrelevant on the main DFS sites. The Clippers have pulled out of their tailspin with three straight wins, but are still giving up tons of FPs to opposing backcourts with Patrick Beverley (knee) done for the year and two offensive-minded guards replacing his minutes in Austin Rivers and Lou Williams. Plus, Rodney Hood (ankle) is questionable for Utah and that could lead to even more usage for Mitchell. Dwyane Wade – (5,600 DK/6,000 FD) Kevin Love carried the Cavs offense and LeBron James grabbed headlines by getting ejected in the third quarter of Cleveland’s latest win, but Dwyane Wade simply continued to produce. The veteran dropped 17 points on 8-of-16 FG shooting and should remain a consistent cash play as the leader of the Cavs second unit. Wade is posting a 34 percent usage rate and averaging 1.40 FPs per minute with Love and James off the floor, which is a frequent occurrence since he’s coming off the bench, and he draws a great matchup tonight against a Hawks team that gives up the second-most FPPG (44.75) and most RPG (7.0) to opposing SGs this year. Potential Value Kent Bazemore – (5,400 DK/5,100 FD) Bazemore is a solid bet to meet production in a matchup against a tired Cavs team. Longshot Lou Williams – (7,300 DK/8,000 FD) Lou-Will is carrying the shorthanded Clippers offensively and he’s always a boom-bust candidate to consider in tournaments. Small Forwards Giannis Antetokounmpo – (11,100 DK/11,800 FD) Giannis went off with 32 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals to meet value on his lofty price tag over just 28 minutes of run on Tuesday. Tonight the Bucks (+3) are underdogs against a Portland team with great defensive numbers, yet the Blazers couldn’t stop The Greek Freak when he went off for 44 points on 17-of-23 FG shooting last month. Portland is good defensively, but coughs up the second-most BPG (6.0) and commits 15.2 turnovers per game, which makes Giannis even more appealing on FanDuel where blocks and steals count for 3 FPs. Marcus Morris – (4,700 DK/4,600 FD) If you’re looking for a cheap cash play it’s hard not to love Marcus Morris after he produced 20-plus FPs in a seventh consecutive game on Monday. He’s playing limited minutes, but will be playing on two full days rest tonight and could see a little more run. The Sixers have a good defensive rating, yet they allow the eighth-most PPG (107.7) and as mentioned above, may be a little tired after facing Washington on Wednesday. Potential Value Sam Dekker – (3,500 DK/3,800 FD) Dekker is a dark horse candidate to see a huge spike in production with Blake Griffin out and Danilo Gallinari (hip) still sidelined. Longshot Robert Covington – (6,200 DK/6,200 FD) Covington should see a heavy rise in usage rate with Joel Embiid out tonight. Power Forwards Ben Simmons – (9,300 DK/9,900 FD) With Joel Embiid slated to rest tonight, Simmons will have to try and carry the Sixers offense in a tough matchup at the Celtics. He boasts a 30.4 percent usage rate and averages 1.30 FPs per minute with Embiid off the floor and is coming off a career-high 31-point game in which he set an NBA record with 24 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter. The Celtics do a great job of limiting opposing shooters, but struggle at times to protect the rim and could have trouble keeping an elite athlete in Simmons out of the paint. Montrezl Harrell – (3,500 DK/4,400 FD) We’ll have to see how the Clippers rotation shakes out with Blake Griffin (knee) set to

Scouting The NBA – 11/29/17

Plays of the Day Value: Kelly Oubre Jr. stayed hot with 16 points over 31 minutes in a plus matchup against Minnesota last night and is definitely worth a look with John Wall (knee) still out ahead of a matchup in Philly. Fade: DeMarcus Cousins ate up Karl-Anthony Towns the last time those former Wildcats faced off, but KAT could get a modicum of revenge tonight and at least hold Boogie under value, which has been a consistent result for the mercurial big man lately. Point Guards Russell Westbrook – (11,200 DK/11,000 FD) James Harden draws a juicy matchup against a Pacers team that is playing at the ninth-fastest pace and giving up the fourth-most PPG (23.29) to opposing PGs, which is essentially Harden’s role despite the addition of Chris Paul. While he’s a better option at just $400 more on DK, Westbrook is the superior play given their difference in price on FanDuel. He’s rolling over his last four games and faces a Magic defense that’s been absolutely awful lately. Tyus Jones – (4,500 DK/5,30 FD) As long as Jeff Teague (Achilles) remains out, Jones will serve as a fantastic value play and a cornerstone of lineups on both main DFS sites. The former Duke standout added 12 points and 7 assists in last night’s loss to Washington, but notably played 40 minutes and is clearly Minnesota’s only true option at PG until Teague gets right. Potential Value Rajon Rondo – (4,900 DK/4,800 FD) Rondo should remain a solid source of FPs in the right matchups and he could be facing Minnesota’s backup PG tonight in Jones. Longshot Lonzo Ball – (6,800 DK/6,700 FD) The sheer pace of play between the Lakers and Warriors tonight gives Ball a chance to pile up peripheral stats and maybe post a triple double. Shooting Guards Tyreke Evans – (6,600 DK/7,500 FD) Mike Conley (Achilles) remains out and his backup Mario Chalmers (ankle) is questionable, which could lead to a start for Kentucky product Andrew Harrison. Yet it could also lead to Tyreke Evans serving as the primary facilitator for Memphis in a matchup against a Spurs team that’s been giving up above average production (41.65 FPPG) to opposing SFs with Kawhi Leonard inactive all year. Evans has been quiet over his last couple of games, but his playing time remains consistent and interim HC J.B. Bickerstaff should look to unleash the Reke in an effort to come out with a tough road win. Tim Hardaway Jr. – (6,500 DK/6,100 FD) Hardaway Jr. could get hot again tonight against a Heat team that is on the second half of a B2B set. Hardaway is scoring 0.52 points per minute with a 24.7 percent usage rate this year and should play well off of Kristaps Porzingis and Enes Kanter now that both big men are healthy.. Miami ranks 25th in opponents 3PT shooting (.378%) and Hardaway Jr. is getting it done both inside and out while averaging 18.6 PPG and 33.1 DK PPG at home this season. Potential Value Jeremy Lamb – (5,500 DK/6,300 FD) Lamb remains a solid mid-tier option despite the return of Nic Batum. Longshot Bradley Beal – (8,100 DK/8,300 FD) Beal will be a contrarian play tonight after busting in a plus matchup last night, but he could bounce back against the high-scoring Sixers with John Wall out. Small Forwards Paul George – (8,600 DK/8,600 FD) Orlando’s defense has been a disaster over the past few weeks and if you can’t afford Russell Westbrook, Paul George as an intriguing option as a way to gain some exposure to the Thunder offense tonight. The Magic allow the most FPPG (45.50) and third-most PPG (24.42) to opposing SGs this season and while PG technically plays SF, he handles just about all the spot-up shooting on the wing when playing next to defensive specialist Andre Roberson. He’s been productive with defensive stats despite going through a brief shooting slump of late and could serve as a great per-dollar GPP play if he finds his stroke in this juicy road matchup. Kelly Oubre Jr. – (4,200 DK/4,300 FD) He continued his hot streak with 16 points over 31 minutes in a plus matchup against Minnesota last night and Oubre is definitely worth a look in what could be a much higher-scoring game in Philly this Wednesday. When John Wall (knee) is off the floor Oubre Jr. sees a 5.1 percent rise in usage rate and he may even play some with Bradley Beal off the floor as well on the second half of a B2B set. Potential Value Stanley Johnson – (3,900 DK/4,000 FD) Johnson is a low-upside value to consider in a plus matchup against the Suns. Longshot Otto Porter – (6,700 DK/7,300 FD) Porter carried the Wizards last night with John Wall out and could continue to thrive if defenses pay too much attention to Bradley Beal. Power Forwards Kristaps Porzingis – (8,200 DK/8,900 FD) He met value on Monday in a tough matchup against the Blazers and Porzingis’ price tag continues to drop, so clearly he’s worth a look in a better matchup tonight. The Heat is tough on opposing centers, but Enes Kanter (back) should return to split time with Kyle O’Quinn and they’ll be the ones contending with Hassan Whiteside. Miami’s also on the second half of a B2B set and Whiteside’s been icing his knee recently so he might not be ready to play a full slate of minutes, while The Zinger thrives at MSG with averages of 28.5 PPG and 45.3 DK PPG over 13 home games this year. Harrison Barnes – (6,100 DK/6,500 FD) Out of necessity, Harrison Barnes has been the main man for the last-place Mavericks this year and that’s made him a very good cash play. He draws a beautiful matchup tonight against a Nets team that plays at the third-fastest pace and coughs up the second-most PPG (113.7) in
JaguarLou’s Cheat Sheet – 11/28/17

The Jaguar’s Mado: If you’re not max entering GPP tournaments, I strongly recommend only playing single entry and 3-5-person cash leagues. Week 13 NFL DFS Sleepers by Nate Weizer

Week 13 NFL DFS Sleepers Quaterback QB Jimmy Garoppolo @ CHI – The matchup is far from ideal against an underrated Bears secondary, but it’s hard to find a QB with Garoppolo’s talent floating out there on the waiver wire. While C.J. Beathard believes he avoided a serious injury toward the end of Sunday's loss to Seattle, he's likely to cede his job to Garoppolo if he's at anything less than 100 percent. As the only other QB active, Garoppolo made his Niners debut in garbage time and completed two passes for 18 yards, so he could be forced into action this week. Running Back RB Jacquizz Rodgers vs. GB – An ineffective Doug Martin was ruled out last Sunday with a concussion in a loss at Atlanta. In relief, Peyton Barber scored a pair of short TDs and he could start in a road game at Green Bay in Week 13. Yet the Packers' defense is far more vulnerable against receiving backs, so look at Jacquizz Rodgers as the preferred option in PPR formats should Martin sit next week. RB Austin Ekeler vs. CLE – After producing double-digit FPs in a third consecutive game, it’s safe to say that Ekeler’s production is no fluke. He’s a matchup nightmare for linebackers in coverage and an elusive runner between the tackles, while Melvin Gordon’s continued struggles in terms of YPC ensures that Ekeler will continue to get touches. Up next is a juicy matchup against the winless Browns and Cleveland’s better against interior rushes, which could lead to more work for Ekeler as a receiver. Wide Receiver WR Cordarrelle Patterson vs. NYG – Amari Cooper was placed in the league's concussion protocol and Michael Crabtree was ejected early in a win over Denver, so he could be suspended ahead of a Week 13 date with the Giants. The Raiders might be very thin at receiver and Cordarrelle Patterson is functioning as a true dual threat with big play potential for them. His versatile role should help him avoid shadow coverage from Giants shutdown CB Janoris Jenkins and he would be worth a dart throw for desperate owners if either Cooper or Crabtree is out this Sunday. WR Zay Jones @ NE – When taking a receiver against the Patriots, volume is assured at the very least because their opponents often wind up getting down big. The Bills bounced back with a road win at Kansas City last week and will certainly be fired up to take on the AFC East leaders this week, while Jones should continue to serve as the team’s top target with Jordan Matthews (thumb) and Kelvin Benjamin (knee) injured. Jones has compiled 13 catches for 154 yards and 2 TDs over his last 3 appearances and is stepping up as the top receiver Buffalo hoped they drafted. Tight End TE Ricky Seals-Jones vs. LAR – There’s no reason to ignore Seals-Jones after he scored again in a tough matchup against Jacksonville this past Sunday. The 22-year-old TE has totaled 7 catches for 126 yards and 3 TDs over two appearances as he’s running circles around fossilized incumbent Jermaine Greshman. While he draws another tough matchup this week against the Rams, Seals-Jones should continue to see plenty of targets with another elite secondary game planning to stop a quasi TE in Larry Fitzgerald, an approach that contributed to the rookie’s success last Sunday.
Scouting The NBA – 11/28/17

Plays of the Day Value: Tyus Jones compiled 17 points, 13 assists and an impressive 11 steals over his last two appearances with Jeff Teague (Achilles) out and he’d become a virtual must play if starting for Minnesota. Fade: LeBron James and Dwyane Wade certainly need to rest their aging bodies and they would like to have that luxury on the second half of a B2B set. With Miami coming to town, they may be motivated to play bigger minutes, but that’s not guaranteed. Point Guards Eric Bledsoe – (6,600 DK/7,000 FD) Bledsoe has been able to meet or exceed value in three straight games while seemingly growing much more comfortable on his new team. He stands to keep that streak going tonight against a Kings team that ranks 26th in defensive rating and 26th in opponents 2PT FG shooting (.521%). With no tangible rim protector, the Kings have been burned in the paint and EB is shooting an efficient 24-of-52 (46%) from the floor while pouring in 62 points in his last three appearances. Tyus Jones – (4,300 DK/5,200 FD) It’s a toss up between Jones and Mike James of Phoenix since both PGs could serve as great values depending on who is out tonight. Jeff Teague (Achilles) seems much more likely to miss a third straight game however, then Devin Booker (knee), who said he’s hopeful to suit up for Phoenix. With Teague out, Jones compiled 17 points, 13 assists and an impressive 11 steals over his last two appearances and he’d become a virtual must play if starting for Minnesota. Potential Value Mike James – (4,600 DK/4,400 FD) James is still worth a look regardless of Booker’s status in a plus matchup against the young Bulls, especially at that dirt cheap price tag on FanDuel. Longshot Tim Frazier – (4,100 DK/4,900 FD) Frazier doesn’t have tremendous upside, but he does have a decent floor while John Wall (knee) remains sidelined. Shooting Guards Bradley Beal – (7,900 DK/8,300 FD) With John Wall (knee) out over the next couple of weeks, Beal can become a staple for lineups in any format. He sees the biggest increase (6.3%) in usage rate to dwarf his teammates with a 37.2 percent usage rate when Wall is off the court this season. Beal launched 24 FG attempts in a close loss to Portland and draws a much better matchup tonight against a Wolves team that’s ranked 28th in defensive rating and dead last in opponents FG shooting (.487%) this year. Kelly Oubre Jr. – (4,300 DK/4,300 FD) Oubre Jr. could be a sneaky beneficiary of Wall’s absence and perhaps a better plug and play than Tim Frazier given his superior upside. The athletic young lefty sees a 5.1 percent rise in usage rate and averages 0.47 points per minute with Wall off the floor this season and he’s been productive lately with 40 points and 14 boards over his last three appearances. Minnesota’s been a fantasy-friendly matchup for wing players this year and Oubre remains quite cheap. Potential Value Tyler Johnson – (4,200 DK/5,500 FD) Johnson has flashed an ability to exceed value at times and he faces a horrific Cavs defense tonight. Longshot Khris Middleton – (6,600 DK/6,800 FD) Middleton mixes in big scoring games once in a while and he could serve as a great pivot off Bledsoe in GPP formats against a weak Kings defense. Small Forwards Otto Porter – (6,400 DK/7,300 FD) Porter went for 24 points and 10 boards against an athletic Portland team on Saturday and he seems like another candidate to benefit with Wall out. He averages 1.06 FPs per minute with a 4.7 percent usage rate when Wall is off the floor this season and leads the team in usage rate (26.7%) when both Wall and Beal sit. He could provide sneaky upside if the Wolves use Jimmy Butler to try and contain Beal tonight, as Minnesota gives up the ninth-most PPG (21.65) to opposing SFs partially because Andrew Wiggins is a far worse defender than Butler. Denzel Valentine – (5,600 DK/6,200 FD) Valentine played a team-high 40 minutes while providing excellent play on both ends of the floor on his way to 14 points, 13 rebounds and 7 assists on Sunday. Averaging 11.6 PPG since moving into the SLU, Valentine appears much more comfortable in his second NBA campaign and he’s dictating things offensively with an 18.3 percent assist rate. Up next is a Suns team that just paced the Cavs for the designation of worst defensive rating and Phoenix also gives up the most RPG (47.4) while playing at the third-fastest pace in the NBA this season. Potential Value Joe Ingles – (4,800 DK/5,800 FD) Ingles has a solid floor in what should be a fast-paced matchup with the Nuggets. Longshot T.J. Warren– (7,300 DK/7,400 FD) Keep an eye on Warren as a potential GPP option should Devin Booker sit for Phoenix. Power Forwards Lauri Markkanen – (6,700 DK/6,900 FD) He’s had a couple of quiet games recently, but Markkanen has much more upside than other PFs in this price range such as Derrick Favors. The Bulls young stud is averaging 17 points and 9.8 rebounds per 36 minutes with a hefty 21.4 percent usage rate and he faces the worst rated defense in the NBA tonight. To make matters worse for the Suns, all of their big men are far too slow to close out on Markkanen and cut off his drive, which is how he’s been able to post an offensive rating of 102 and average 14.4 PPG as a rookie. Kenneth Faried – (3,900 DK/4,600 FD) Faried moved into the Nuggets SLU on Friday with Paul Millsap (wrist) out indefinitely, and even though he was a DNP-CD the game before, he’s likely to see closer to 30 minutes in a matchup against the sizable Jazz frontcourt. The Manimal is still grabbing 10 boards per 36 minutes

Scouting The NBA by Nate Weitzer – 11/27/17

Plays of the Day Value: Kyle O’Quinn could serve as a great value if Kristaps Porzingis (back) and/or Enes Kanter (back) remains sidelined for the Knicks tonigh.. The bruising center tallied a season-high 20 points with 15 rebounds with both The Zinger and Kanter out on Saturday and needed just 26 minutes of run to provided 10x value on his salary. Fade: Steph Curry might sit out tonight’s tilt, although he might play while Kevin Durant (ankle) sits. If both players are active, Curry makes for a good fade in what should be an easy win for the Warriors, while he draws a relatively tough matchup against lively young defender De’Aaron Fox. Point Guards Lonzo Ball – (7,100 DK/7,200 FD) Lonzo really struggled in his NBA debut against the Clippers last month while facing a highly motivated and elite defender in Patrick Beverley. Yet he’s improved drastically since that showing to the point that he’s averaging 9 PPG, 10.5 RPG and 8 APG over his last four appearances. Beverley (knee) is done for the season and the Clippers defense is reeling without him, coughing up 104 PPG while dropping 11 of their last 14 contests. Ball has a solid floor because of his ability to pile up peripheral stats and his upside is tangible in this rematch. T.J. McConnell – (4,700 DK/5,400 FD) Ben Simmons (elbow) could return tonight after a two-game absence and take away from T.J. McConnell’s upside, but the pass-first PG is still worth a look as a source of salary relief. Cleveland ranks dead last in defensive rating and gives up the third-most APG (25.4) in the NBA this season. The Cavs allow the seventh-most FPPG (48.64) and second-most APG (10.32) to opposing PGs this season, while McConnell is coming off a career-high 13-assist game against Orlando. He’s averaging 26.4 DK PPG while shooting 53 percent from the floor over eight home games this year and should see plenty of run even if Simmons returns as a way to match up with the small-ball Cavs. Potential Value De’Aaron Fox – (4,600 DK/4,800 FD) A high-risk value at the Warriors, but Fox has been known to step up his game against the toughest competition. Longshot Chris Paul – (7,900 DK/9,100 FD) Paul should eat young Spencer Dinwiddie for breakfast and pile up dimes in a fast-paced meeting with Brooklyn. Shooting Guards Klay Thompson – (7,000 DK/7,000 FD) With Steph Curry (hand), Kevin Durant (ankle) and Draymond Green (foot) all listed as questionable tonight, it’s quite possible that one or two of them sit in a very winnable home game against the lowly Kings. Thompson sees a 3.3 percent rise in usage rate when either Durant or Curry is off the floor and a 5.4 percent rise when both are off the floor. He’s 13-for-26 from deep over his last four appearances and faces a Kings team that ranks 29th in opponents 3PT shooting (.392%) this year, while Sacramento happened to be the victim of Klay’s record-breaking 37-point quarter two seasons ago. Lance Stephenson – (4,100 DK/4,600 FD) If Victor Oladipo (knee) returns after missing Saturday’s tilt against the Celtics, Stephenson will likely come off the bench, but he was productive with a combined 21 points, 17 rebounds and 6 assists over two appearances a reserve before burning the Celtics elite defense for 16 points on 5-of-9 FG shooting. Orlando’s giving up the third-most PPG (110.5) and a whopping 117 PPG during a current 8-game losing streak, so you’re going to want to grab a piece of the Pacers offense whether it’s with a value in Stephenson or a stud Oladipo if active. Potential Value Austin Rivers – (4,900 DK/5,500 FD) Rivers is playing big minutes for his father and coach and that often translates into a solid floor, especially against an inexperienced Lakers team. Longshot Dwyane Wade – (5,400 DK/5,400 FD) Wade has been up and down over the past couple of weeks, but could flash his surprising upside in a high-scoring bout at the Sixers tonight. Small Forwards LeBron James – (11,400 DK/12,000 FD) LeBron definitely pays attention to what’s happening around the league and often comes up with his biggest efforts against up-and-coming teams such as the Sixers. He’ll look to take Ben Simmons (if active) to school tonight and follow up his monstrous triple double against the Hornets with a big line against a Philadelphia team that gives up an above average 41.38 FPPG to opposing SFs this season. LBJ is rocking a career-high 42.6 percent assist rate and true shooting percentage (.661%) to carry Cleveland through some early-season struggles. Wes Johnson – (4,400 DK/5,200 FD) Pair LeBron with a cheap forward in Johnson, who should be continue to see heavy minutes with Beverley done for the year and Danilo Gallinari (hip) still out. Johnson produced disappointing numbers in his last outing but it’s encouraging to see him play 40 minutes in a close game against the young Kings. He’ll be needed to matchup with an athletic young Lakers squad tonight that plays at the third-fastest pace in the NBA and gives up plenty of production as a result of that style. Potential Value Harrison Barnes – (5,500 DK/6,600 FD) Barnes has been extremely consistent as the primary scorer and rebounder for Dallas and he draws a good matchup against the Kawhi Leonard-less Spurs. Longshot Trevor Ariza – (5,200 DK/5,400 FD) Ariza is a key cog in the Rockets three-point shooting machine of an offense and faces a weak defensive team in the Nets tonight. Power Forwards Kristaps Porzingis – (8,300 DK/9,300 FD) Porzingis missed Saturday’s game at Houston to rest an ailing back in what might’ve simply been a maintenance day with the Knicks checking in as heavy underdogs against a high-powered Rockets team. If he returns tonight against the Blazers, he’ll serve as a relative value with much more upside at home, where he’s averaging 29 PPG on 49.4
