Week 1 Fantasy Football Busts

Week 1 is officially in the books and it’s time to evaluate some of the surprise poor performances around the NFL in Week 1. Several superstars who were expected to do big things fell flat on their faces. Will these players continue to struggle or will they right the ship? Let’s take a look at the Week 1 fantasy football busts and what we should do in Week 2. Quarterback Lamar Jackson (Baltimore Ravens) – The Ravens may have defeated the Houston Texans comfortably but there are many things to address in Baltimore. First of all, Baltimore’s running attack took a major hit as JK Dobbins went down with a season-ending torn Achilles. With Gus Edwards and Justice Hill filling in, it will be even more important for Lamar Jackson to bounce back after a dreadful debut to the season. Although he was efficient, finishing 17 of 22 on dropbacks, Jackson only accumulated 169 passing yards. He added 38 rushing yards on six attempts but fumbled twice, one resulting in a turnover. Despite not having Mark Andrews on the field, Jackson had one of the juiciest matchups heading into the opener but failed to live up to the hype. He produced two turnovers (one interception and a fumble) and failed to find the end zone. Jackson did develop a nice rapport with rookie wideout Zay Flowers and Odell Beckham Jr. even showed a few flashes. That said, fantasy owners will be hoping for a much better outing from their star quarterback on Sunday. Things will only get tougher for Jackson in Week 2 as the Ravens host their AFC North rivals, the Cincinnati Bengals. However, Jackson should get back on track despite a difficult matchup. Deshaun Watson’s numbers against the Bengals in poor weather should be encouraging for Jackson owners and the return of Mark Andrews should help the electric signal caller get back on track in Week 2. Fantasy owners shouldn’t overreact to Jackson’s dismal Week 1 performance. There are brighter days ahead. Week 2 Decision: Start Running Back D’Andre Swift (Philadelphia Eagles) – I am the first to admit that Swift’s Week 1 performance has me shaking in my boots. I thought he would be one of the biggest steals in fantasy football. But the Eagles didn’t give Swift the rock. The newest addition to the Philadelphia offense only managed two touches for a meager three yards. Despite the fact that Rashaad Penny was a healthy scratch. Surprisingly, it was Kenneth Gainwell who absolutely dominated the touches in the backfield. We knew Gainwell would start but he also finished with 74 all-purpose yards on 18 touches. While we expected the Eagles to utilize Gainwell from time to time, nobody in their right mind expected that much of a difference in the workload. Swift only played approximately 35% of the Lions’ offensive snaps in 2022 and most thought that number would increase in his first year in Philly. However, the dynamic running back played just 19 of a possible 66 offensive snaps in Sunday’s 25-20 victory over the New England Patriots. Meanwhile, Gainwell turned his 41 snaps into a fairly productive outing and Boston Scott was even slightly in the mix (eight snaps). We will have to wait another week to see if Swift can get out of the dog house. However, I would recommend taking a wait-and-see approach after his uneventful Week 1 outing. Fantasy owners simply cannot trust him heading into Week 2 even if Penny is a scratch again against the Minnesota Vikings. It also doesn’t help that the Vikings allowed the fifth-fewest fantasy points to opposing running backs in Week 1. Even if that was against the lowly Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Rachaad White finished with just 39 rushing yards on 17 carries as Tampa’s RB1. Things aren’t looking good for Swift heading into Week 2. Week 2 Decision: Sit Wide Receiver Tee Higgins (Cincinnati Bengals) – Higgins entered the season as perhaps the most talented WR2 in the entire NFL. Unfortunately, the weather was bad in Cinatinnati’s season-opening loss to the Cleveland Browns. And Higgins finished with an embarrassing goose egg. However, it was encouraging to see Burrow target the versatile wideout eight times despite missing each connection. I wouldn’t overanalyze this one. Joe Burrow is still an elite quarterback despite his terrible Week 1 performance. Higgins should still be the second option in the passing game behind Ja’Marr Chase. The volume was there so there’s no reason to get too worried just yet. Fire Higgins up in Week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens. It’s not an easy matchup but Higgins can only improve from here, right? Week 2 Decision: Start Tight End Dallas Goedert (Philadelphia Eagles) – It’s very surprising to see two members of the defending NFC Champions on this list. But Dallas Goedert was Week 1’s biggest bust at the tight end position after finishing with a whopping 0 fantasy points on just one target. The Patriots did a very good job defending Goedert but the weather didn’t do the big tight end any favors. The rain limited the Eagles’ offensive game plan and forced them to be an even more run-heavy team than they perhaps would have liked. That said, head coach Nick Siraianni made a point to mention Goedert’s lack of involvement in his post-game interview. “We can’t go a game without getting Goedert the football,” he said. Fantasy managers can rest assured that the Eagles will be working all week to find ways to get their playmaker the ball more in open space. Although Goedert will always be third in the pecking order behind A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, Goedert should bounce back in Week 2 in what could be a high-scoring affair against the Minnesota Vikings. Fantasy owners should still start him with confidence as he should produce top-six numbers from the competitive tight end position. Week 2 Decision: Start The 2023 NFL season is underway but it’s not too late to get
Fantasy Football Recap Week 14

Week 14. The most pivotal week of the year. Millions of fantasy football playoff spots were clinched. And sadly, many seasons ended after an unpredictable Sunday slate. The FullTime Fantasy Football Recap Week 14 looks back on the final regular-season week of the season. This Fantasy Football Recap Week 14 will be our final look back at the 2022 season that was. From now on, we look forward with our eye on the prize. Also, as a friendly reminder, there are three NFL games this Saturday, so plan accordingly. DNR Did you leave Evan Engram on your bench to start Tyler Higbee? I hope you didn’t sign a DNR at the hospital. It’s hard not to overthink things with a potential playoff spot on the line. However, the pain from losing that spot can linger. Not just all offseason, but for years. Trust me- I know that all too well. I still get trash-talking texts from my buddy about Natrone Means. But the DNR that impacted us the most in Week 14 was the dreaded “Did Not Return” designation. In particular at the quarterback position. We had all kinds of QBs injured when we needed them to punch our fantasy postseason ticket. Tyler Huntley, already subbing in for the injured Lamar Jackson got hurt early and DNR. Kenny Pickett also DNR with a potential concussion. Then, there are the signal-callers that fan bases wish Do Not Return. Maybe ever again. Looking at you, Derek Carr. Not to mention, this all took place in the same week that Baker Mayfield went from cast off in Carolina to hero in Los Angeles. There is just no way you could ever have predicted this week to play out the way it did. But, that’s what keeps us coming back for more, even if we wished it could all end via DNR. Backfield Breakdown With so few teams employing a workhorse running back, it is essential for us to track how coaches divide their backfield touches. Here are the fantasy opportunities from some of Sunday’s backfields. Opportunities means carries plus targets. Baltimore – J.K. Fantasy Football Recap Week 13

The opening slate of Week 13 was a lot of fun. From a fantasy perspective, it felt like a return to normalcy. The football games were generally good, too. The FullTime Fantasy Football Recap Week 13 looks back at the games to see what they mean moving forward. Hard to believe that the fantasy playoffs are here for many leagues. Our Fantasy Football Recap Week 13 should be able to provide some interesting nuggets to help you advance. QB1 Hurts How about that Jalen Hurts guy? The superstar Philadelphia quarterback produced 392 yards of offense and four more touchdowns en route to QB1 honors for the week. If you took just Hurts’ rushing numbers he would be a top-30 fantasy back. There were some questions about Hurts this summer. I certainly am guilty of questioning his long-term viability. But the former Alabama signal-caller has silenced those critics. But Jalen Hurts wasn’t the only hurts that came out of the quarterback position today. Unfortunately, QB injuries put the hurtin’ on many fantasy lineups in Week 13. Lamar Jackson suffered an early knee injury and was unable to return. After the game, John Harbaugh said Jackson could miss some time but the injury is not season-ending. At least we were the lowest in the entire industry on Jackson versus Denver this week. Later, Jimmy Garoppolo hurt his foot and was carted to the locker room in the first quarter. For a team with a legitimate shot at the Super Bowl, the 49ers have had some bad luck with quarterback injuries. That got me looking at the overall status of the quarterback position heading into the fantasy lineups. By my count, nine of the 28 teams playing this week have different starters playing right now than they opened the season with. As they say, the 18-week regular season is a war of attrition. Especially if you just happen to be taking snaps under center. Backfield Breakdown With so few teams employing a workhorse running back, it is essential for us to track how coaches divide their backfield touches. Fantasy Football Recap Week 12

Week 12 is always one of my favorite weeks. By the time Sunday rolled around I was still working on Thanksgiving leftovers. Unfortunately, as you’ll read in the FullTime Fantasy Football Recap Week 12, reheated turkey and stuffing was the only highlight of the early afternoon. Let’s take a look back at what should have been a banner Sunday for more than just my first-ever butter-baked turkey. Which was elite, by the way. Finally a 10 week There were seven games in the early kick window. And, as appealing as some of those matchups were, the scoring certainly didn’t live up to the bill. Maybe all the boys were still feeling the effects of the tryptophan. Heading into the third quarter, only two of the 14 teams active have more than one touchdown. Eight teams had exactly 10 as their score. Now, normally a 10 is a good thing. However, for NFL and fantasy football purposes, it is not. And there were some solid matchups, too. But, it’s usually difficult for teams to overcome poor quarterback play. And that’s precisely what the early slate on Sunday served up. If we’re being fair, I’d rate that turkey I served up Thursday considerably higher than the Week 12 action. Unfortunately, it is all gone now. Just like my chances of winning several of my fantasy matchups after the sluggish start to what should have been a banner week. In an effort to wrap things up positively, the scoring and excitement picked up substantially in the afternoon slate. Which is about as much as we could ask for. Backfield Breakdown With so few teams employing a workhorse running back, it is essential for us to track how coaches divide their backfield touches. Fantasy Football Recap Week 11

We’re now 11 weeks into the 2022 season and while this past week was full of drama and defense, it was mostly a low scoring fantasy week. Let’s look back on Sunday with the FullTime Fantasy Fantasy Football Recap Week 11 and see what we can learn from another Sunday of NFL action. Also, we’ll take an early peak at Week 12. Where’s the Beef? And by beef I mean points? That opening slate of games was brutal. When the Redzone Channel went to the ‘witching hour’ of the fourth quarter, eight of the 16 teams had one TD or less. Six of the squads had zero. And the weather wasn’t even a factor. It was just a poor offensive showing all around. The Patriots-Jets contest set the game back 30 years. There wasn’t even an offensive touchdown mustered at all. New England got the first punt return TD of the entire season for the only touchdown of the day. Zach Wilson was particularly brutal. Not that Jets fans expected anything else. The last time New York defeated New England in regulation, Wilson was in seventh grade. Of course, Wilson wasn’t the only signal-caller who struggled. Eight of the 16 QBs who started at 1 ET failed to account for even one touchdown pass. This is one of those weeks where the guy in your league who forgot to change his lineup wins with his running back on bye. Where your first-place eliminator team gets knocked out due to one brutal week. On the bright side, I made some bad DFS calls, too. However, the scoring was so low that I may end up with a profitable week. That will be a first with a lineup with more ice crystals that fire emojis. This seems like the lowest scoring NFL DFS slate ever. — JeffElJefe (@JeffKCollins) November 20, 2022 Week 11 was just that kind of slate. Backfield Breakdown With so few teams employing a workhorse running back, it is essential for us to track how coaches divide their backfield touches. Fantasy Football Recap Week 10

We’re now 10 weeks into the 2022 season and we may have just had the best Sunday yet. This week’s slate offered up some fascinating games with plenty of scoring and back-and-forth action. Our Fantasy Football Recap Week 10 looks back at all the drama. Let’s look back on Sunday with the FullTime Fantasy Fantasy Football Recap Week 10 and see what we can learn from another Sunday of NFL action. Don’t Count Your Chickens That Buffalo versus Minnesota game was wild. First, we saw an unbelievable catch by Justin Jefferson. Just an amazing one-handed snag on a desperation throw to keep a drive alive. A few plays later, Jefferson seemingly caught a touchdown, which led to celebrations. Including me, where I sent a troll text to my group text thread. See, I have Jefferson in my lineup and was talking trash. Oops. The play was, rightfully, overturned and the Vikings were ultimately stopped short to end the game. Or at least seemingly. All the Bills had to do was take a safety or fall forward. They had a 99% chance of winning. Instead, Josh Allen never handled the snap, and the Vikings recovered the botched hand-off in the end-zone. But, it STILL wasn’t over. Buffalo drove down the field to send it into overtime. Now, Minnesota still emerged victorious but it drove home the point. Never start celebrating until it is over. But, as a natural observer, that was a highly-entertaining contest. Backfield Breakdown With so few teams employing a workhorse running back, it is essential for us to track how coaches divide their backfield touches. Here are the fantasy opportunities from some of Sunday’s backfields. Opportunities means carries plus targets. Fantasy Football Recap Week 9

The weather isn’t the only thing cooling off. Well, at least it felt that way on Sunday. After a bonkers Week 8, our Fantasy Football Recap Week 9 seems to be lagging behind in one important category. Touchdowns. And this slate appeared to have so much potential, too. But that promise was undermined by uncharacteristic turnovers and poor quarterback play. Ultimately, just another Sunday on the calendar. Albeit another odd one is this wild 2022 campaign. Let’s look back on Sunday with our Fantasy Football Recap Week 9 and see what we can learn from another challenging Sunday. Leveled Up As much as I love football, the Houston Astros are my team. Ever since I was very young. Well, the Stros and Oilers, but that didn’t work out. However, being a fan of those teams in the 80s and 90s was integral to me growing up paranoid and insecure about ever seeing a championship. I swear no team in the history of sports was as brutal to their home fan base as those Oilers. Love Ya Blue, but that franchise always came up short. 35-3 3rd quarter leads, 12-game winning streaks, sideline fisticuffs from coaches. No matter what, they always blew it. And the Astros broke plenty of hearts along the way. 80, 86, 98, 2005..it was brutal. Speaking of 2005, the Longhorns brought what was my personal favorite sports moment that year. Up until 2017, at least. But, they needed to see that. Good or bad. So when I prepared to take the very risky approach of watching the 2022 World Series Game 6 potential championship clincher with my fiance and her kids I took a risk. They’ve never seen me get really emotional. And good or bad, that was going to happen Saturday. Generally, I’m still paranoid when it comes to blowing leads in the biggest moments. Something about the past… However, I was oddly optimistic all day. And my Houston Astros did it. It was a great moment for my future family. Also, I make no apologies for being obnoxious about repping the “cheaters.” I believe I’ve earned it after decades of heartbreak. Backfield Breakdown With so few teams employing a workhorse running back, it is essential for us to track how coaches divide their backfield touches. Here are the fantasy opportunities from some of Sunday’s backfields. Opportunities means carries plus targets. Fantasy Football Recap Week 8

After a one-week hiatus, the Fantasy Football Recap Week 8 is back. Speaking of returning from a layoff, welcome back to the fray offensive production! Week 8 had some massive fantasy performances and even Kyle Pitts managed to score a touchdown. In the opening slate of Sunday action, the OVER went 5-2. Also, home teams were 6-1 straight up and 5-2 against the spread. Not only did it feel like there was more action in Week 8, but the initial numbers prove it. Conversely, it was an exciting end to the second month of the NFL season. And, it was a great way to cap off what was an exhausting week. Welcome Back As the Welcome Back Kotter theme song plays in my head, I’m still reeling from a week of travel. I was out of town from very early Monday and had a busy week of presentations and data. I’ll admit, I ate well and enjoyed some adult treats but it was a difficult week for my routine. After seven weeks of the same weekly process centering around football, I was a bit rattled ahead of Week 8. Don’t get me wrong- we were in good hands here at FullTime Fantasy. My partner Billy Muzio stepped up and took care of the waiver wire. The Godfather himself, Scott Atkins also outworked the Sweathogs. Of course, I was still involved in the process. I just had to pull some late-night shifts and do more behind-the-scenes labor than usual. Admittedly, I was in a bit of a brain fog toward the latter part of the week. Hundreds of miles of travel and little sack time will do that. But it’s good to be back to that normal routine. Who’d have thought they’d need ya? Back here where we need ya. Backfield Breakdown With so few teams employing a workhorse running back, it is essential for us to track how coaches divide their backfield touches. Here are the fantasy opportunities from some of Sunday’s backfields. Opportunities means carries plus targets. Fantasy Football Recap Week 6

Just one glance at the Week 6 leaderboard solidifies the importance of in-season management. Of course, that isn’t applicable in best ball formats but it furthers the points. The key theme in our Fantasy Football Recap Week 6 is titles aren’t won in August. The current top-10 fantasy scorers for each position are littered with guys who likely weren’t drafted at all. But, if you’re paying attention, you saw some of those performances coming. At least you did if you’re actively working the waiver wire. Winning at a high level takes work. And a little luck. But mostly, you got to keep grinding. Told Ya! Now two months ago this wouldn’t have been a big deal. But, in Week 6, you’re telling me Kyle Pitts AND Allen Robinson caught touchdowns?! Indeed, it happened but an early graphic for Robinson was telling. 12 receptions, 102 yards, 1 touchdown That was Robinson’s line. For the whole season. All summer I could’ve sworn that would have been A-Rob’s weekly production. But here we are, in the sixth game and that’s his total. Pitts is even more depressing. Everyone had him plugged in as a top-3 tight end with 120 targets as the baseline. There are certainly more examples of how the right process can bring the wrong results. I’m sure it happens just as frequently every year. But, in this business, all you can do is look ahead. So those past disappointments fade from your memory. It just reiterates the point I made at the top. Keep grinding and looking ahead. But, it’s ok to remember that one glorious Sunday- Week 6- that our boys came through for us! Afternoon Dee-saster Last week I lamented at the unbalanced schedule. That was in play again this week, but it didn’t seem like it would be as egregious. After all, the Kansas City vs. Buffalo game promised to light up the scoreboard with that over/under of 54. The NFC West battle between Arizona and Seattle also offered a ton of scoring appeal. Also, the Rams were poised to light up the scoreboard in a ‘get right’ spot against a Carolina squad trotting out a new quarterback and interim coach. Welp. All six teams playing in the afternoon window entered halftime of their respective game with one or zero touchdowns. Sloppy play and turnovers ruled the second slate, even with what looked like a promising watch, full of fantasy stars. Instead, we snoozed through punts, missed field goals, defensive touchdowns, and inept offensive output. Even the ultra-rare “playing getting kicked out of the game by his interim coach” factored in. However, in an effort to end on a positive note, UNDER bettors were undoubtedly pleased. Fantasy Football Recap Week 5

AWeek 5 was both a return to normalcy and highly odd. In other words, status quo for 2022. One takeaway before i delve into the Fantasy Football Recap Week 5 is that the league’s new concussion protocol is going to create a lot of fantasy football chaos. And that is not to be taken as a negative. These young men play a violent sport and every possible safety protocol should be in place to protect them. If we get some things wrong on our fantasy rosters, oh well. Much better than seeing someone’s life impacted permanently. First Impressions We’re really spoiled today. 4K TD TV. The Red Zone Channel bounces back and forth to every game. Websites and apps bring us instant news and stats live. Life for football fanatics is so much better than it used to be. For the life of me, I can’t figure out how anybody would choose to attend a game live over all that. Consequently, as great as technology is, have you noticed that maybe it’s made us arrogant? I know I’m not the only one who sees close plays and just “knows” the outcome that seems to baffle the play-by-play announcers and officials. It’s to the point where I feel like I should be the one determining coaching challenges from right here on my couch. I’d have a hard time giving up this gig but I’d listen to offers. Holler at me Houston Texans. However, with accountability being a hot topic in fantasy football this week, I have to admit I had a rusty Sunday of making sure calls. First, I was convinced they’d overturn that Mike Evans non-TD call. Following that, the catch by Chigoziem Okonkwo (which would’ve paid +650) looked good. Lastly, the James Robinson fourth-down carry…nope. At this point, it was a rough day on the couch. But, I did get the Chris Olave touchdown grab correct. He deserved that one. So did I. Get The Balance Right Admittedly, I was looking for a clever way to make a Depeche Mode reference since I was surprised to hear they’re actually dropping a new album last week. Makes me think of some of the other old guys who had a strong showing in Week 5. Tom Brady threw for 351 yards. Tevin Coleman came out of nowhere to put up a very good performance. Marvin Jones was about the only good thing to come out of the Jacksonville game. But, rather than balancing more of those trusty veterans with the current class of first-round dynasty talents, I’m thinking more balance with the schedule. Obviously, there was the one London game, which I love. There should always be an early game IMO. Then there were nine games that kicked off at 1 PM Eastern. Following that onslaught were just three games in the 4 PM window. Also, one of which was in Carolina so it barely qualifies as an NFL contest. Still, I am aware that there are more teams east of the Mississippi but it’s not that unusual to have those squads play in the afternoon slot. From a scheduling perspective, it would be preferable to have it be a little more even. That’s the Policy of Truth.
