The 2022 NFL Draft is now just days away and the anticipation is growing. Trying to project this draft might be a futile project but it is always fun to break down prospects and predict their landing spots. It also is a good way to help stay on top of fantasy and dynasty football news.

After posting Jody Smith’s 2022 NFL Mock Draft 1.0, here is my attempt at forecasting Round One.

1. Jacksonville Jaguars – Aiden Hutchinson (DE) – Many fell in love with Walker after the combine, but Hutchinson is simply the better player and needs to be the top guy off the board if the Jags go with a defensive end as I expect them to.

2. Detroit Lions – Travon Walker (DE) – I don’t love the pick her but the NFL loves upside. Walker is off the board at No. 2. 

3. Houston Texans – Ahmad Gardner (CB) – The Texans need everything and Sauce is the best player in this draft. They need to go best available and they do here. 

4. New York Jets – Kayvon Thibodeaux (EDGE) – With Gardner off the board to the Texans, Thibodeaux is the no-brainer choice here being that I can’t see them going O-line.

The 2022 NFL Draft is rapidly approaching. As each day goes by we seem to have a better understanding of which prospects are picking up momentum to be selected. At the same time, it grows more and more difficult to try to project all 32 first-round picks with any degree of accuracy.

Here’s my latest 2022 NFL mock draft for Round 1.

1. Jacksonville Jaguars – Travon Walker (DE) – After blowing away the combine, Walker’s stock is on the rise. So much so that Doug Pederson can take a chance on Walker’s immense upside and choose to fortify his offensive line later in a class that is relatively deep at tackle.

2. Detroit Lions –  Aiden Hutchinson (DE) – The Lions are building from the trenches and reinforcing a defensive that was 31st in passing yards per attempt and 26th in sack rate is a top priority. Hutchinson is widely considered the safest prospect in this draft and gives Dan Campbell the type of three-down pass rusher he covets.

3. Houston Texans – Evan Neal (OT) – Houston has the least talented roster in football and has needs at every position. The offensive line has been problematic for the franchise for many years and Neal projects to be an All-Pro left tackle. Neal can fill in anywhere this season and would step right in for current starter Laremy Tunsil if the club were to move on from Tunsil’s high price tag after the season.

4. New York Jets – Ahmad Gardner (CB) – It is rare to see a cornerback be drafted in the top-5 but ‘Sauce” is a dynamic player who has the size and skills to be a shutdown corner for the next decade. Gardner is the type of rare talent that can immediately upgrade an entire secondary and the Jets were dead last in yards and points allowed in 2021.

Khalil Shakir (WR) Boise State

College Production

Four-star recruit out of Vista Murrieta High School in Murrieta, California, committed to Boise State and played in 10 games during true freshman season, catching 16-of-22 targets for 170 yards and one touchdown. Became full-time starter during sophomore campaign, and put up a 63/872/6 line in 14 starts. During Covid-shortened junior season, caught 52 balls for 719 yards and 6 TDs in 7 games. Named to All-Mountain West First Team in 2021 and played in the Senior Bowl after compiling 1,117 receiving yards and 7 scored on 77 catches. Had second-most catches in the Moutain West since the 2020 season.

Strengths

• Versatile. Took snaps under center, lined up in backfield and on jet sweeps, and played all over the field as a wide receiver. Also has kick return experience.

• Hugely competitive with elite football IQ and character.

• Dangerous downfield threat who seems to always be where the ball is and make a big play each game.

• Very good hands catcher. Plucks passes out of the air in full stride and excels at creating space on breaks.

After catching 23 passes (8 for touchdowns) as a senior at Plant High School in Tampa, Florida, Watson redshirted his true freshman (2017) season at North Dakota and contributed 9 receptions for 165 yards during the Bisons’ 2018 Division 1 championship run. Was named to the All Missouri Valley Football Conference Second Team in 2019 after posting a 34/732/6 line and an additional rushing score. Promoted to the All-MVFC First Team during the abbreviated 2020 campaign and again in 2021. A four-time FCS champion, Watson also suited up for the 2022 Senior Bowl and stood out in practice all week.

Pierre Strong Jr. (RB) South Dakota State

College Production

Rushed for 2,248 yards and 30 touchdowns during junior year at John L. McClellan High in Little Rock, Arkansas. As a senior, was named Arkanas’ 5A Offensive Player of the Year and committed to South Dakota State on January 16, 2017. Redshirted first season with Jackrabbits but was named Missouri Valley Football Conference Freshman of the Year after rushing for 1,116 yards (9.5 YPC) and 11 scores in 2018. Earned first of three All-MVFC First Team honors in 2019 after compiling 1,187 total yards and 9 TDs. Named First Team All-American, SDSU MVP, and was a finalist for the Walter Camp Award after breakout 2021 campaign after leading FCS with 1,673 rushing yards and ranking 2nd with 18 touchdowns on the ground.

Strengths

• Superior speed. Led all running backs at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine with a 4.37 40-yard dash and also posted a 95th-percentile 113.5 Speed Score. Had 10 touchdowns from 50-plus yards at SDSU.

Desmond Ridder (QB) Cincinnati

College Production

Named All-Metro out of St. Xavier High School in Louisville, Kentucky, signed letter of intent and redshirted for Cincinnati in 2017. Named the starter in 2018, passed for 2,445 yards and 20 touchdowns, and led the Bearcats to a 35-31 victory over Virginia Tech in the Military Bowl, and was named AAC Rookie of the Year. Broke out in 2020, earning All-AAC First Team and AAC Offensive Player of the Year honors and was named MVP of the 2020 Birmingham Bowl. Capped off his college career with a phenomenal senior campaign of 3,334 yards, 30 TDs and led the Bearcats to the college football playoffs for the first time.

Jashaun Corbin (RB) Florida State

College Production

Corbin wasn’t overly productive at Florida State but was a consistent and reliable back after transferring from Texas A&M after an injury-plagued 2019 season. In 2020 he carried the ball 81 times for 401 yards and five TDs while adding 19 receptions for 115 yards through the air. He improved on those numbers in 2021 rushing for 887 yards on 143 carries and scoring seven TDs while chipping in with 25 receptions for 144 yards and a TD in the passing game.

Strengths

Justyn Ross (WR) Clemson

College Production

Rivals’ No. 15 recruit out of Phenix Central High School (AL) after snagging 13 touchdowns and excelling as a returner during senior season. Committed to Clemson and set a school record by averaging 21.7 yards per catch and posting an impressive 46/1,000(team-high)/9 en route to Freshman All-American accolades. Earned All-ACC Honorable Mention honors in 2019 after catching 66 passes for 865 yards and 8 scores. Sat out 2020 due to a bulging disk and congenital spinal fusion but returned during redshirt junior season to post a 46/514/3 line.

Jeremy Ruckert (TE) Ohio State

College Production

Ruckert was the No. 1 tight end recruit in the country coming out of high school and clearly made the wrong choice of which college to attend. Despite getting playing time being the starting tight end for the majority of his time at OSU, he was criminally underutilized thanks to the offensive system. During his four years, he caught just 54 passes for 615 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was little more than a big body in the red zone with last year being his best statistical season catching 26 passes for 309 yards and three TDs. At a school that used their TE as a true receiving threat, he has the talent to blow these numbers out of the water.
