Breaking Down Committee Backfields

Chase Edmonds

In today’s NFL, it seems like there are fewer three-down feature backs than ever. With more teams employing rotations, breaking down committee backfields is an important part of fantasy draft preparation.  It also can lead to an opportunity to exploit value for those that can stay ahead of predicting how these committee backfields will play out, which opens up a variety of different draft strategies.  Let’s look at some of the confusing backfields of 2021 and how fantasy football fans should approach them Miami Dolphins There are plenty of teams in today’s NFL that have at least a split-back system. However, in this article, I will try to focus on the teams that are expected to split touches at least three ways. That being said, the Dolphins may have the busiest running back room in the entire league as touches may be split between four backs weekly. New head coach Mike McDaniel had a history of using multiple runners during his stint as offensive coordinator in San Francisco. However, they also often struggled with injuries which leaves the question, was the multi-back system more based on design or necessity? Regardless, I do believe we will see a lot of rotation in this backfield. The four backs I’m projecting to be in that rotation are Chase Edmonds, Raheem Mostert, Sony Michel, and Myles Gaskin.  I anticipate Edmonds leading this backfield in touches. He’s probably the most versatile of the backs being that he can run inside, outside, and catch passes. Mostert is in that conversation as well, but Edmonds is much more durable. At his current ADP Edmonds is being selected as the RB35. He’s an absolute steal there in McDaniel’s zone-blocking, run-heavy system.  Mostert is the wild card as he’s not only the most dynamic and dangerous back on the Dolphins, but he’s one of the most explosive players in the entire league. He’s a big play waiting to happen. The concern is that he isn’t durable enough to give a ton of touches too. He is more of a best ball option for me. As dynamic as he may be his upside is capped by the fact that he maxes out at about 6-8 touches per game.  Michel projects to be the short-yardage and goal-line guy. However, I believe he’s the least talented back in this backfield. While in theory, he should have touchdown upside I believe he eventually loses his role and becomes an afterthought by Halloween. Gaskin is an interesting case. Many predict he could be cut, but he’s never anything short of spectacular in camp every summer. I do believe he will earn a roster spot and with Mostert’s fragility could end up with a significant role in the likely scenario that Mostert misses time. We have seen him put up monster games on bad offenses. He should be monitored on the waiver wire in 2022 despite starting the season as the Dolphins’ fantasy RB3 due to Mostert’s big-play upside.  New England Patriots The Patriots are a habitually confusing backfield year after year. This year it’s more important than ever to decipher because the backs they have are extremely talented. The only saving grace may be that James White is a candidate to start the season on the PUP list forcing him to miss the first six games of the season, which would vastly improve Damien Harris and Rhamondre Stevenson’s PPR potential. The team also added Pierre Strong Jr. who is a talented rookie but I don’t expect him to be a factor this season.  We know when healthy James White is a premier pass-catching back with limited work on the ground. He is a major part of the offense, nevertheless, the real question here is do you want to roster Harris or Stevenson?  Last year in his rookie campaign we saw Stevenson take 133 carries for 606 yards with five TDs. He averages 4.6 yards per attempt and saw his touches increase as the season went on. He also caught 14 passes for 123 yards. Harris also averaged 4.6 yards per attempt rushing 202 times for 929 yards and 15 TDs. He snagged 18 passes for 132 yards.  The thing that jumps out about those numbers is obviously the TD disparity. Harris has a nose for the end zone, and I don’t expect that to change. However, Stevenson looks more explosive with the ability to break more big plays. Assuming White does miss time to start the season I expect the backs to split time fairly evenly. The difference will be I believe Stevenson will see a significantly higher volume of targets in the passing game and Harris will get the majority of the goal-line work.  With that said, I give Harris a slight edge here. Stevenson could very well be the more productive fantasy back in the first half of the season. My concern is that when White does return we will see Stevenson’s PPR value plummet and Harris will still be finding himself with the ball near the end zone. This is very close and I like both backs, all three if you include White, but the edge goes to Harris in New England.  Buffalo Bills The Bills were already a confusing backfield and this offseason they added rookie James Cook and pass-catcher Duke Johnson. It appears Devin Singletary had overtaken Zack Moss as the lead back in Buffalo although it has at times over the past two years seemed exactly the opposite. Still, I expect Singletary to be comfortably ahead of Moss so I will focus more on how Cook and Johnson will factor into the workload.  Devin Singletary does start the season as the RB1, nonetheless, the real RB1 in Buffalo may actually be QB Josh Allen. There is a real chance Cook is more talented than Singletary. He certainly appears to be more explosive. However, he had the biggest workload of his career last season at Georgia with 68 carries and only ran the ball 113 times. Granted he

A healthy portion of annual fantasy football enthusiasts are still casual redraft fans who just want to join an office pool or throw together a quick draft to help make those autumn Sundays a little more interesting.

But a quick visit to Twitter is all you need to do to see the growing popularity of dynasty fantasy football leagues. Unlike those one-and-done redraft formats, dynasty leaguers play for keeps. An initial draft means you get to keep those players forever, which places more emphasis on youth and potential.

Scouting and research are more important in dynasty, as finding the next huge breakout star can make your roster a competitive team for years to come.

After writing countless rookie scouting profiles this spring, I have mixed feelings about the incoming rookie class, especially at quarterback. Now that landing spots are known and training camp is right around the corner, it’s time to take a look at my 2022 dynasty QB rankings.

Be sure to sign up for our Discord, as these rankings will be updated often throughout the summer.

Javonte Williams 2022 Fantasy Outlook

Javonte Williams

Javonte Williams 2022 Fantasy Outlook Although the 2021 Denver Broncos stumbled to a 7-10 record, second-round rookie RB Javonte Williams had a promising debut. Despite splitting the backfield touches nearly evenly with veteran Melvin Gordon, Williams accumulated 1,219 scrimmage yards, scored seven touchdowns, and compiled overall RB16 numbers in PPR leagues. With Gordon set to hit unrestricted free agency ahead of the 2022 NFL campaign, fantasy fanatics made Williams a popular early target for a potential top-5 showing as Denver’s featured back. But after flirting with the idea of joining a crowded Baltimore backfield, Gordon ultimately re-signed with the Broncos to re-form a deep and talented tandem in Denver. Now that we know the rejuvenated Broncos, who made one of the biggest offseason splashes by trading for nine-time Pro Bowl signal-caller Russell Wilson, will once again feature a committee backfield, fantasy managers are wondering what to expect out of Denver ahead of the 2022 draft season. 2021 Usage After opening last season 3-0, Vic Fangio’s Broncos squad endured two separate four-game losing streaks, which led to Fangio and offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur’s dismissal. Despite having a top-10 run-blocking offensive line and rushing for 2,025 yards, suboptimal quarterback play sunk the team’s playoff hopes down the stretch. One thing that Shurmur’s play-calling did last year was utilize both Williams and Gordon in a strikingly similar fashion. PLAYER GAME RUSH YARD AVG TD TGT REC YDS TD Javonte Williams 17 203 903 4.4 4 53 43 316 3 Melvin Gordon 16 203 918 4.5 8 38 28 213 2 Both backs received 203 rushing attempts and had nearly identical efficiency numbers running behind Denver’s solid front five. Williams finished his rookie season as the overall RB16, while Gordon was one spot behind thanks to accumulating double-digit touchdown numbers for the fifth time in his last six NFL campaigns. Because the Broncos rotated backs in drives rather than situationally, Gordon’s elevated red-zone touches appear to be coincidental. Williams cashed in 3-of-10 carries inside the opponent’s five-yard line, while Gordon succeeded in 4-of-11. Presence of Melvin Gordon But it was Williams who looked like the better overall producer when exploring advanced analytics. The rookie outperformed Gordon in yards after contact, breakaway rank, and was more elusive. Williams ranked second among all NFL running backs with 63 missed tackles forced. Gordon was no slouch in those areas either, ranking ninth in missed tackles forced and top-20 in breakaway rushing yards. Williams was, however, more effective in the passing game and performed exceptionally well in pass protection for a first-year running back. This should bode well for Williams in his sophomore season as Denver’s passing attack should be significantly better with Wilson taking the snaps. With recent reports indicating that Williams will see an uptick in touches and should lead Denver’s backfield committee, fantasy managers are questioning how they should prioritize both backs in 2022 fantasy drafts. 2022 Fantasy Outlook Williams was a top-10 pick in early fantasy drafts but has started to slide after the Broncos brought Gordon back into the fold. Still, Williams is more explosive and played a bigger role in the passing game a year ago and new head coach Nathanial Hackett has a history of successfully employing multiple backs. With a slight increase in touches and an offense that should be drastically better with Russell Wilson under center, a season with 1,000-plus rushing yards, 50-plus receptions, and approaching double-digit scores seems perfectly within the realm of possibilities for Williams, who will be an intriguing fantasy option in the second round of 2022 fantasy football drafts. Even if Gordon sees a slight reduction in carries, he’s still an effective fantasy option who has top-10 upside if forced into a featured role. View the eighth-year pro as a solid RB3 with weekly flex value and a solid value pick to target in the middle rounds. 2022 Fantasy Football Fades

The 2022 fantasy football season is upon us; people are flocking to draft rooms with their draft cheat sheets and rankings in hand to take down the grand prizes in their favorite tournaments. They are crossing off names one at a time, looking for value, looking for their favorite targets, and avoiding their 2022 fantasy football fades.

Below you can find my 2022 fade list with detailed reasonings and data supporting my choice to pass on players when I am on the clock. But before we begin, I think it’s important to clarify what I mean by fade.

Fading a player does not mean I will not draft a player- There is a point at which every player is draftable; that cost is up for you to decide. However, considering my overall roster portfolios, I roster fewer of these players than the rest, and I think it would be irresponsible or foolish not to own any.

That being said, I often find myself passing on these players due to the draft capital required to acquire them, and I will continue to fade them unless something in the offseason changes the fantasy landscape or their projected outlook.

Let’s dive into Part One of my 2022 Fade List for the 2022 fantasy football season, looking at quarterbacks and running backs.

Quarterbacks

Joe Burrow– Don’t get me wrong, I love Joe Burrow, and I love his weapons, but I can’t get behind the cost it takes to acquire him in drafts. Burrow is currently being selected as QB6 in early FFWC draft rooms. He is going ahead of Tom Brady, Jalen Hurts, Dak Prescott, and Russell Wilson, to name a few.

Cincinnati’s strength of schedule sits at .536 in 2022. That ranks as the third-highest behind the Los Angeles Rams and Arizona Cardinals. We also need to consider his fantasy shootout schedule (weeks 15-17). Burrow faces the best of the best, starting with the Bucs, Pats, and then Bills. Looking at Joe Burrow’s successes in 2021, we can’t help but think there will be some regression in 2022.

Burrow led the league in completion percentage at 70.4%; he was 8th in the league in TD’s, 6th in the league in money throws, 3rd in the league in touchdown rate at 6.5%, 8th in the league in deep ball completion percentage at 43.1%, 2nd in the league in true passing rating, and 3rd in the league in accuracy rating. I know this sounds AMAZING- but that’s the caveat; even after that monstrous season, Burrow finished 2021 as QB8. He would need to outperform those robust statistics to give investors a return on the draft capital necessary to acquire him in drafts.

FFWC Best Ball Drafts: For Beginners

QB Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson

FFWC Best Ball Drafts: For Beginners Guest Post from Bradley Stalder of FantasyData. It’s officially fantasy football season and Best Ball drafts are in full swing. Recently, I had the pleasure of assembling an FFWC Best Ball squad and the results were fantastic. For those unfamiliar with Best Ball formats, each week teams will accumulate points from an optimized starting roster. There is no lineup setting– the program will optimize automatically. Nine players comprise the starting roster: 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRS, 1 TE, 1 FLEX, and 1 D/ST. Per usual settings for Best Ball, there is no FAAB (Free Agent Acquisition Budget) Waiver runs in this starter draft. Notable Scoring Settings: 0.05 points per passing yard, 4 points per passing TD, 6 points per rushing/receiving TD, 0.1 points per rushing or receiving yard, 1 point per reception, and heightened defensive scoring. See further scoring details here. Preparation & Philosophy Before Drafting Starting 3 WRs drives up the value of wide receiver, devaluing all the other positions. Prioritizing WRs in both the early and middle rounds would be necessary. Knowing that wide receiver is the most volatile of positions, and needing to start 3, selecting anchor receivers early paired with boom-bust partners later on allowed for more flexibility. Stacking an elite fantasy quarterback would be determined by their proto-type. A mobile, Konami Code QB would decrease a desire to correlate with multiple pass-catchers. However, if a defined pocket-passer was selected, their corresponding pass-catcher would be a priority.  Confidently drafting rookie WRs and RBs once starting positions are secured. Rookies tend to improve as the season goes on. Veteran wide receivers and running backs tend to get more banged up or end up on injured reserve as the season goes on.  Entering Round 1 Drafting Davante Adams signaled prioritization of drafting an elite WR early. The next day after I selected him, however, Adams was traded from the Green Bay Packers to the Las Vegas Raiders for two draft picks. While Adams’ value dropped, his 2022 outlook still projects as a top-6 wide receiver. Had Adams been traded the day prior, a selection of Justin Jefferson instead of Adams would have made more sense. Regardless of the perceived loss of value from the Adams trade, leaving Round 1 with a WR1 was a win.  Surprising Pick of Round 1: Austin Ekeler went off the board at the 1.03 as the RB2 behind Jonathan Taylor. Early ADP suggests that Ekeler is selected as the RB5 closer to the 1.09 or so.  Round 2 There was a bit of an RB run between 1.09 and 2.04. In fact, five of the next seven picks were running backs. Alvin Kamara ended the tier of elite running backs. Kamara rushed a  career-high 240 times last season and is the only sure thing on the New Orleans offense. While there are questions about what the offense will look like without Sean Payton, Kamara has eclipsed RB4 in PPR fantasy points per game in four of his five career seasons. The risk of Kamara’s pending legal situation was baked into his fall to 2.05. Surprise Pick of Round 2: CeeDee Lamb fell to the 2.10 as the WR10. Lamb’s ADP has hovered between WR7 and 8 so far this offseason.  Round 3 Selecting Diontae Johnson at 3.08 was straight theft. Only one player with 100+ targets last season had more targets per game than Johnson: Cooper Kupp. Despite Ben Roethlisberger’s documented decline over the past three seasons, Johnson has steadily improved year-over-year, finishing 2021 as the WR8 in PPR fantasy points per game. His floor is unquestioned. Again, leaving the first three rounds with two high-floor elite WRs would allow for more risks later on in the draft. Surprise Pick of Round 3: David Montgomery off the board at RB15 at 3.09. Montgomery’s ADP usually falls outside of RB20.  Round 4 Breece Hall, projected as the first rookie RB off the NFL draft board, was selected at 4.05 and the 17th running back off the board. Over the past seven seasons, the first rookie RB drafted went on to be RB16 in PPR ppg six times. The only one not to score that high? Clyde Edwards-Helaire at RB23. In fact, five of the last seven seasons, the first RB selected off the rookie draft board finished as RB9 or better. Aside from his savory measurables, history is on Breece Hall’s side to out-perform RB17.  Surprise Pick of Round 4: Chris Godwin at WR20. Godwin tore his ACL in week 15 against the Saints. A late-season ACL tear is a risk when a drafter is investing WR20 draft capital in a start-3 WR league.  Round 5 At 5.08, Travis Etienne was the gamble of the draft. Selected right after Najee Harris in the 2021 NFL draft, Etienne missed his whole rookie year due to a lisfranc injury. However, Doug Pederson suggested that Etienne will be able to do off-season and drill work. With 4.50 speed, 1st round draft capital, and 85 receptions in his final two seasons at Clemson with teammate Trevor Lawrence, Etienne’s potential as a needle-moving playmaker in an improved and up-tempo Pederson-led Jacksonville offense.  Surprise Pick of Round 5: Darnell Mooney at 5.01 and the WR23 off the board. While Mooney showed interesting upside last season, his ADP as outside the top-30 of WRs looks like a significant loss of value. Perhaps Mooney wouldn’t have made it back to this team, but it looked like a tier-overstep. Round 6 At 6.05, Lamar Jackson provided relief in the midst of six consecutive quarterback selections. Jackson’s Konami Code accesses a ceiling nearly unmatched by any other quarterback– three top-2 weekly QB finishes in ‘21, five top-5 weekly QB finishes in ‘20, and nine top-3 weekly QB finishes in ‘19. Perhaps the most interesting trend in ‘21 was Jackson’s significant Pass Attempts increase; 34.4 attempts per full game was a 28.7% increase from his previous seasonal career high. Lamar Jackson is also a strong quarterback consideration
