My friend, Mike Tagliere

“What are you writing?,” I asked my buddy and co-worker Mike Tagliere at the Omni in Dallas in January of 2016. At that time, Mike and I were both writing for Pro Football Focus and we had the opportunity to meet at the FSTA Winter Conference. That was an All-Star crew PFF assembled. Mike Clay, Jeff Ratcliffe, Nathan Jahnke, Tags, myself. I relished the opportunity to meet some of my friends from fantasy football Twitter and get the chance to network in the industry that I had come to love. Turns out, what Tags was writing was a note to Mark Cuban, millionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks and the guest speaker of that season’s FSTA conference. See, Tags was driven to be successful as a writer. To be full-time in this space and he wasn’t going to let this opportunity escape. After Cuban addressed the participants, Mike and I lingered out of the conference room and Cuban spoke to a handful of people. Before he was escorted away by his one-man security detail, Mike Tagliere worked his way through the growing crowd and managed to shake hands with Cuban and handed him the note that Mike had scribbled down. A few minutes later, we were making our way down to the hotel’s bar for a drink and as we walked, I asked Tags what he said to Cuban. Mike kinda told me about how important it was for him to “make it” and that Cuban responded with some encouraging words. It must have been amazing motivation because Tags soon had a rocket propelling his momentum and he went out there and achieved everything he ever wanted to be. And it couldn’t have happened to a better person. Mike represented everything about making it the right way. Tags never had to resort to gimmicks, passive-aggressive quote tweets, thrusting himself into others’ conversations, or trolling athletes. He simply worked harder than anyone else, remained kind, and gave some of the best analyses and opinions that were out there. Even as Tags continued to ascend the ranks of “made” men and his influence grew, he never changed who he was. No matter how inexperienced or new an aspiring writer or podcaster was, Mike always found the time to give back and donate his time. And he was always humble and so appreciative of those still willing to put in that grind. One of my favorite all-time podcast spots I’ve ever participated in was with Tags and his wife Tabbie, back when they kicked off my favorite show, The Hot Route Podcast. I was the second-ever guest on the show and it was such a fun hour. Tags, Tabbie, and I talked about all kinds of non-football things and I even made it through the segment with off-the-cuff embarrassing personal questions that gave that show its unique edge and flavor. Sometime later, I started my own program, The Old School Podcast, and true to form, I had Mike on as my second guest. By that time, he had really come into his own as a talent. I was always envious of how Tags could join any media, television, podcast, local radio, satellite radio, it didn’t matter. Mike was so good at his job that he had the data and facts ingrained in his head. Mere mortals like myself often need pre-show notes to prepare facts and numbers but Tags was such an amazing writer and analyst that he didn’t need prep time. That, to me, is the mark of a consummate professional, and one who certainly should be considered among the very best at his craft. As great as Mike was in football, nothing made him happier than his wife, Tabbie, and his two kids Alyssa and Jonathan. Back to that chilly week in Dallas, Mike was the person I was most looking forward to connecting with. And to be honest, I kinda tagged along with Tags all week. I didn’t know she was coming, but Mike brought Tabbie to the conference. After meeting her, I had a better understanding of Mike’s drive. Tabbie was the most caring, kind, and supportive spouse I’d ever encountered. She filled Mike with encouragement, motivation, and genuinely wanted him to achieve his dreams. I watched in amazement how Tabbie could socialize with us scrubs, support her husband, and use her downtime there in the hotel to study. She wanted to become a nurse, and in true Tagliere fashion, that’s exactly what she achieved. I remember sipping on an IPA and thinking to myself what an amazing couple and how nice it must be to have someone be so supportive in life. On the second night in Dallas, after the main conference and cocktail hour, the vast majority of FSTA participants gathered to carpool off to American Airlines Center to watch a Mavericks basketball game. As part of the festivities, an extra $100 bought all FSTA participants a ticket to the game and all-you-can-eat-and-drink seating at the Jack Daniels Bar. Maybe because we weren’t “made” men yet, but Tags and I had elected not to buy the ducats. But after some talking, we decided we certainly wanted to go. It was Tabbie who said, “let’s just go; what’s the worst that can happen?” So Tabbie had this cool app on her phone called Uber and next thing you know, the three of us showed up at the arena and found a big group of people with FSTA lanyards on. We sorta just got in line and wouldn’t you know it? They waved us through like we were supposed to be there. And man, was that fun. Great laughs, socializing with so many people in the fantasy industry, unlimited food and drinks…oh, and the game went into overtime too! Not long after that, I took my annual February sabbatical and watched with amazement how my good friend Mike Tagliere became “Tags”. Mike landed a full-time job with FantasyPros. It was truly inspiring to watch Mike’s real personality come out on

Week 2 WR/CB Matchups Deeper Dive

A couple of important tools to help you each week in your weekly start/sit decisions. One of our most valuable tools here at FullTime Fantasy is our “Head to Head Stats” tool. Just enter any positional player and the team they’re facing this week, to see how they’ve fared against them in the past. Our Weekly WR Matchups tool. This helps you identify statistical matchup problems or advantages for wide receivers, tight ends and running backs. It gets stronger throughout the year. My job is to take a deeper dive into this tool to better understand the data it presents. Check out the full report for Week 2 here. DeVante Parker vs Buffalo Bills On paper the Bills look like a nightmarish matchup for Parker, however, he has been a major problem for Buffalo. Going head to head with Tre’Davious White and Levi Wallace, Parker has scored more than 16 Fantasy points in their last six meetings and has scored more than 12 Fantasy points in all of their last 9 matchups with one exception when he scored 0 after leaving with an injury according to our FullTime Fantasy “Head to Head Stats” tool.  In two meetings last season, Parker totaled 12 receptions on 22 targets for 169 yards and a TD. This includes one game started by his current quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in which he posted a seven-catch, 116-yard game. White was out that game, but with the absence of Will Fuller again this week for Miami expect Parker to see plenty of targets up against the Bills corners and history tells us he should get the best of this matchup making him a valuable flex option. He has consistently gotten the best on White and the Bills throughout his career.  DeAndre Hopkins vs Minnesota Vikings With Patrick Peterson now in Minnesota, he will be forced to face off against his former team and their star wideout. Hopkins and Peterson have faced off twice before in 2013 and 2017 while Hopkins was in Houston. In those two matchups, he has posted Fantasy totals of 12.9 and 17.6 points. This is a revenge game for Peterson, but don’t anticipate it going well for him. While Hopkins is still an elite option, Peterson has lost a step. It’s likely Nuk will have the best game he’s ever had against Peterson this week. He is no longer a corner to fear like he once was and even when he was playing at an elite level, Hopkins still got his. Tyreek Hill vs Baltimore Ravens This one could be a blood bath for the Ravens. Hill has faced off with the Ravens’ DBs twice in 2018 and 2020. Both times he tallied more than 20 Fantasy points. Most notably last season he has rung up more than 100 yards from scrimmage and a TD. This was against the trio of Marcus Peters, Jimmy Smith, and Marlon Humphrey who took turns matching up with the cheetah.  Unfortunately for the Ravens this time around Peters and Smith are both injured so the burden will all fall on Humphrey’s shoulders and whatever help he can get from his safeties. There is no reason Hill shouldn’t eat in this matchup. The Ravens’ secondary was scary coming into the season, nonetheless, injuries have drastically tampered down their expectations, and opposing wideouts should benefit. In this case, it’s Hill. Plug him in and expect elite WR1 numbers.  Julio Jones vs Seattle Seahawks Now with the Titans, Jones has gone up against the Seahawks corners in each of the past two seasons. Using our “Head to Head Stats” tool we learn that in both games, he saw 12 targets and in both games, he went for over 150 yards. Tre Flowers and DJ Reed will try to prevent him from having another big Fantasy day at their expense.  The big difference in this one is of course that Jones is now in Tennessee. On top of not being the clear-cut WR1 now, his quarterback is Ryan Tannehill and not Matt Ryan. That changes this matchup drastically. It’s very unlikely Jones sees 12 targets in this one due to the run-heavy scheme and A.J. Brown running opposite him. However, Derrick Henry and Brown make it much more difficult for opposing defenses to key in on Jones and he may not even see WR1 coverage.  Jones is a solid flex option or WR3 this week, however, he doesn’t come without risk. The good news is the Seahawks’ corners don’t exactly strike fear in your heart, especially if he isn’t the focal point of their defensive scheme like he was in Atlanta. He’s a bit risky, but he also brings high-end WR2 upside. Get him in your lineups this week.  Jakobi Meyers vs New York Jets Meyers gets another shot at Bryce Hall and the Jets secondary after torching them last year. His first true breakout game last year came against this secondary in Week 9 when he caught 12 passes for 169 yards posting 28.9 Fantasy points. Now he has a much more prolific throwing quarterback in Mac Jones by comparison and is more established as the team’s WR1.  He also had a nice Fantasy day in Week 17 against the Jets totaling 18.3 Fantasy points. This is a tad misleading though. Looking at our “Head to Head Stats” tool we get all the numbers and we see Meyers only caught six passes for 68 yards, however, he threw a touchdown which inflated his points total.  Still, I expect him to be a great option this week coming off a brutal home loss to the Dolphins. Bill Belichick will look to throw the ball often and run the score on the lowly Jets. He has a lot more value in PPR leagues as Jones will look to dink and dunk so this will be a death by 1,000 paper cuts situation. Double-digit receptions and triple-digit yards totals aren’t very much in the realm of possibilities. If he can get into the end

2021 Rookie Running Backs Outlook – 1 of 2

Members enjoy this outlook of 2021 Rookie Running Backs Outlook to prepare you for your upcoming rookie dynasty drafts by our NFL Scouting Analyst Riley Bymaster. The influx of running backs from the 2020 draft class spoiled fantasy football owners throughout last season and continuing into this offseason. If an owner took a chance on one of the consensus’ top seven or eight at the position, it was nearly impossible to find a “bust.” The downside, however, is the class filled a majority of the prime landing spots, leaving few available for the incoming 2021 class. What can we expect from this group of running backs this year after the bar was set highly in 2020? The Sure-Fire Starters Najee Harris – Alabama / 6’1” – 225 lbs Harris is the newest ‘Bama product at the running back position to enter the NFL after proving to be an absolute tank at the collegiate level. Coming off of back-to-back seasons where he produced at least 1,500 yards from scrimmage, Harris sits atop the 2021 class as a day-one starter for both his NFL team and all fantasy squads. With only 638 rushing attempts to his name, the tires have miles and miles of tread left despite being one of the older rookie backs in the class. As for his play style, Harris is a well-built all-around back who shows a thrilling combination of power and elusiveness. He does a great job of following his blockers and waiting for the scheme to open a lane. He is a comfortable pass catcher out of the backfield and will be solid in pass protection. Whether he will run over defenders or make them completely whiff is his decision, which will frighten opposing defensive coordinators weeks before they face him. Grade: High-end starter NFL Draft Projection: Late 1st – Early 2nd Projected DFWC ADP: 1.01 Comparison: A healthy James Conner on steroids Bottom Line: Harris will step in and become an immediate stud for his team and all fantasy teams, no matter the format. Don’t miss your chance on Najee Harris. Javonte Williams – North Carolina / 5’10” 220 lbs Williams was the surprise riser in the crop of 2021 running backs with an extraordinary campaign for the Tar Heels. He broke out during the 2021 season with his first 1,000-yard rushing season and an eye-popping 22 total touchdowns. He and fellow back Michael Carter proved to be one of the deadliest duos in the last decade. He burst onto the scene against Miami and demolished their defense and literally helped a couple Hurricane defenders onto the “Not Top Plays” segment on the following morning’s broadcast. He is an all-around running back who shows little-to-no weaknesses in his overall game. Williams brings unreal balance and will stay on his feet no matter what sized dump truck hits him at full speed. He has both the quickness and speed to make defenders miss in the open field. As a comfortable pass catcher out of the backfield, his offensive coordinator in the NFL will not wait to design plays in order to get the ball in his hands. Williams is the best pass protector in the entire rookie running back class, so expect him on the field in any third down situation. Grade: High-end starter Draft Projection: Early 2nd Projected DFWC ADP: 1.07 Comparison: A well-behaved, Kansas City Chief Kareem Hunt Bottom Line: Williams will produce immediately and become a RB1 week-in and week-out. Don’t be afraid to take him over fellow rookie Travis Etienne – Williams is better. Travis Etienne – Clemson / 5’10” – 210 lbs Etienne leaves the Tigers with one of the most impressive resumes to date. He averaged more than 1,700 yards from scrimmage throughout his final three years in the NCAA. Though many believed he was going to be a part of the 2020 class, Etienne shocked the world and chose to return for his senior season in 2021. In doing so, he showed definite improvement as a pass catcher, which was the biggest question mark about his projection to the NFL. Etienne is an explosive one-cut runner who will accelerate quicker than anyone else on the field. He bounces off tacklers and runs through contact at a high level. He vastly improved as a receiver, so expect a fair share of targets as a rookie. He may run into some trouble with his flexibility as he struggles to avoid contact far too often. He lacks shiftiness and is more straight-line than many want to believe. Etienne is wildly inconsistent in pass protection, which could limit his snaps on third down throughout his first couple years in the league. Grade: Starter with limitations NFL Draft Projection: 2nd Projected DFWC ADP: 1.03 Comparison: Kenyan Drake (floor) – Aaron Jones (ceiling) Bottom Line: Etienne will have an explosive, yet short-lived window of production in the NFL. Ignore the Kamara comparisons and be ready to sell after an early peak. Kenneth Gainwell – Memphis / 5’10” – 201 lbs Gainwell leaves Memphis after just two seasons: one of which he accumulated 143 scrimmage yards through four games and the other where he totaled 2,069 scrimmage yards to go along with 16 total touchdowns. After opting out of the 2020 season, evaluators have his one lone season off of which to base their reports. Though his production was short-lived, Gainwell seems to be the next exciting playmaker out of Memphis who has a chance to make a splash in the NFL. He is another split-position player who spends half of his time at running back and the other half lined up as a wide receiver. He is a natural, crisp route runner who shows the ability to break and stop quickly. He adjusts well to back-shoulder throws and flashes the ability to start as slot at the next level. As a runner, he loves to chip pass rushers at the line of scrimmage, flashing raw power in his pads. He follows his blocks well
