College Production
The 2019 Gatorade Player of the Year (Maryland) out of St. Francis Academy in Laurel, MD., Blake Corum signed on with Jim Harbaugh in Ann Arbor, enrolling in January 2020. Played in half a dozen games as a true freshman, generating 150 scrimmage yards and two scores on 31 touches. As a sophomore, Corum saw an expanded role, earning Third-team All-Big-10 honors and rushing for 949 yards, snagging 24 passes, and scoring a dozen TDs. Moved into the starting lineup in 2022 and broke out. Corum was named to the conference and AP All-American First-teams after running for a career-best 1,463 yards and scoring 19 touchdowns. Corum concluded his Michigan career as team captain and was named the school’s Offensive Player of the Year. Graduated as Michigan’s all-time leading scorer and was named the National Championship Offensive MVP.
Strengths
• Low center of gravity with excellent burst. Puts his head down and moves piles. Corum stood out as a touchdown producer at college and profiles as an effective short-yardage NFL back.
• Powerful for his frame. Corum put up 27 bench press reps (93rd percentile) at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine. Moves piles and runs through arm tackles.
• Accomplished pass catcher who can fill in on all three downs.
• 94th percentile Agility Score. Also posted an 83rd-percentile shuttle and 89th-percentile three-cone drill.
• Plus pass protector.
• Team captain and high character leader and student. Received numerous accolades for community work at Michigan.
Concerns
• Concerning lack of elusiveness. Corum ranked 288th out of 303 qualifying FBS running backs (50+ carries) in PFF’s Elusive Rating in 2023.
• Durability concerns combined with lack of size will be a red flag for some teams.
• Lack of top-end speed. Corum won’t be able to outrun defensive backs.
• Doesn’t force a lot of missed tackles, particularly on the second level.
• Ball security.
Fantasy Outlook
Corum is a fun prospect to watch on film. He overcomes his lack of size and has an impressive nose for the end zone. I don’t know if he’ll be able to hold up to a Devonta Freeman type of workload, but Corum has the potential to be a plus short-yardage option and can fill in on all three downs and in pass pro. Devin Singletary is an interesting comp.
Connecting the dots for Corum to Los Angeles is just too easy. And it would be perfect for fantasy football purposes. The Chargers hired Jim Harbaugh and have already visited with Corum in the pre-draft process. Also, the Chargers parted ways with Austin Ekeler and are certain to add to a backfield depth chart currently led by Gus Edwards.
Corum is going anywhere from 1.10 to the middle of Round 2 in early dynasty rookie drafts. I like him as a solid second-round pick. In redraft, I’ll take some shots on Corum as long as he has a legitimate shot at contributing in at least a secondary role in Year One.
