College Production
Adonai “AD” Mitchell was a Second-team All-District star WR (started career at QB) out of Ridge Point High in Missouri City, Texas who drew a ton of FBS interest before enrolling at Georgia in December 2020. Made 12 starts for the Bulldogs’ national championship squad in 2021, catching 29-of-57 targets for 426 yards and four touchdowns. Georgia repeated as champs in his sophomore season, but Mitchell missed nine games with an ankle injury. Mitchell entered the transfer portal on January 18, 2023, and joined the Texas Longhorns two days later. Earned Second-team All-Big-12 honors and led the Longhorns with 11 receiving scores (55/845/11) in 14 games at Texas.
Strengths
• Outstanding blend of size (6-2, 205) and speed (97th percentile 40).
• Very fast off the line. Stands out on ‘go’ routes, digs, and in coming down with first-down yardage on the sidelines.
• Vertical threat who excels at changing direction at top speed.
• Good separator who can beat press coverage.
• 97th percentile Speed Score (117.1) and 96th percentile Burst Score (135.2). Posted top 10 percentage figures in the broad and vert jumps at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine.
• Tendency to come up big in clutch.
Concerns
• Effort was inconsistent when play was not designed to go his way. Very apparent with a lack of intensity in run-blocking situations.
• Only had one drop in 2023 but is not a natural hands catcher.
• Hauled in just 13 of 30 (43%) contested catch opportunities in college and did not create a lot of yards after the catch.
• Inexperienced running out of the slot, with only 13% of his reps coming inside.
• Could stand to add downfield positioning strength by adding some muscle to his frame.
Fantasy Outlook
Before the Combine, AD Mitchell was considered the favorite of Texas’ dynamic duo, with late first-round potential. However, after Xavier Worthy broke the 40-yard dash record, it’s now a toss-up. Both former Longhorns should go inside the top 40 but each has concerns.
Mitchell’s lack of interest in the blocking game won’t fly in the NFL but his ability to run vertically from the perimeter stands out.
He’s another prospect that makes sense for Buffalo as a Gabe Davis replacement at 28. If he is still on the board on Day Two, the Panthers, Cardinals, and Chargers look like good fits.
Mitchell’s ADP has him firmly in the late first-round conversation. Most savvy fantasy football dynasty managers are drafting in that area with their contending spots. Taking some shots on Mitchell’s upside makes sense at 1.10 or later.
In redraft leagues, we’ll get a better feel for Mitchell’s value after we see his final landing spot.
