College Production

Bowers was considered an elite tight end prospect before even committing to the Bulldogs. He was named to MaxPrep’s 2020 Preseason All-American Team out of Napa High School in Napa, California. After enrolling at Georgia, Bowers made an immediate impact, leading the team in receptions (56), receiving yards (882), and touchdowns (13) en route to a national title. Bowers also garnered All-American and All-SEC accolades and won the Shaun Alexander Award. Won the John Mackey Award in 2022 and repeated All-American and All-SEC honors after once again leading the Bulldogs in all receiving categories and winning another national title. Concluded his collegiate career with a third consecutive stint as the program’s leading receiver and became the first-ever player to win consecutive Mackey Awards as the nation’s top tight end.

Strengths

• Highly productive, proven, and versatile talent. Made an impact as a downfield receiver, rushing threat, and as a reliable blocker.

• Very good hands.

• Quick release with experience in-line, in the slot, and lined up outside.

• 98th-percentile Speed Score (113.6).

• Outstanding weapon as a ball carrier. Averaged 10.1 yards per rush and cashed in five touchdowns on the ground at Georgia.

• Forced 18 missed tackles in 2023. Bowers is an angry runner who will run through tackles and be a plus run-after-catch weapon in the NFL.

• Elite yards per route run numbers are indicative of his downfield playmaking ability.

• Size, speed, and route running will make him a nightmare matchup for linebackers and smaller DBs.

• Durable. Has avoided major injuries and played through minor ailments.

Concerns

• Modest size for a traditional in-line option. However, Bowers would be best employed as a downfield receiver lined up in the slot to dictate favorable coverage mismatches.

• Needs to improve fluidity in route running, particularly coming out of breaks. Will have a harder time shaking off quality pro defenders.

• Only reeled in two of his nine contested catch opportunities in 2023 after hauling in 77% in 2022 and 62% in 2022 with Stetson Bennett under center.

• Lapses in concentration last year. Sustaining blocks was an issue at times. As were drops (3), fumbles (2), and penalties (4).

• Did not perform agility or running drills in Indy.

Fantasy Outlook

Bowers stands out more than any other player in the 2024 NFL Draft. He’s a surefire top-half of the first-round pick that may not see another tight end selected in the top 100. He is also a proven producer with a phenomenal blend of size, receiving prowess,  and historic credentials.

Fantasy managers in TE premium formats could argue that Bowers is worth consideration at the 1.03 spot. However, keep in mind that we are just months removed from Sam LaPorta’s record-breaking rookie campaign. That is likely to drive up Bowers’ price tag.

Also, landing spot will be crucial for his early production. Before LaPorta, freshman NFL tight ends often struggled to quickly adjust and were often over-drafted. Of course, Bowers’ college resume stands for itself and he is more than capable of making an immediate impact should he land with a team that makes him a priority right away.

I will lean more towards caution in redraft but am fully on board with targeting Bowers as a top-10 dynasty target in start-ups. Landing in Los Angeles with the Chargers (No. 5) would be ideal.
