College Production

A second-team all-state football and sprinter out of Saint Stephen’s Episcopal in Bradenton, Florida, Brown spent one season (2018) at Western Michigan before transferring to Illinois. Brown redshirted his first season with the Illini. He earned Big Ten honorable mention accolades in 2020, averaging 5.3 yards per tote and scoring three times. In 2021, Brown drew nine starts and was named to the third-team All-Big Ten squad after rushing for 1,005 yards, catching 14 passes, and producing five TDs. In 2022, ranked fourth in FBS with 1,643 rushing yards and also snagged 27 passes, and scored a career-high 13 ties en route to second-team AP All-American and first-team all-conference honors.

Strengths

• Explosive athlete. Posted a 96th percentile vert and 93rd percentile broad jump at the NFL Combine. In combination with Brown’s 93rd percentile 40-yard dash and he scored a 131.5 Burst Score (95th percentile).

• That initial burst was on display with Brown’s cutting ability in a zone scheme.

• Also benched an impressive 25 reps at the Combine.

• Versatile route runner with experience in the slot and lined out wide. Brown has reliable hands and accumulated a 133.3 QB Rating when targeted in 2022.

Concerns

• Had 6 fumbles in 2022 alone.

• Brown wasn’t very elusive as an outside-the-tackles runner. 2.84 yards after contact per attempt ranked just 155th in the country last season.

• Is on the smaller side and tends to lack the power to move the pile.

• Willing blocker but isn’t always successful. That may not be a concern in the pros as he’s more likely to be running routes in obvious passing situations. However, it could limit Brown’s early-down opportunities.

Fantasy Outlook

Chase Brown’s metrics pop, so he’ll be a popular mid-round target of the analytics dynasty crowd. However, there are concerns about his game transferring to the NFL and that could pigeon-hole Brown into a part-time role. There’s enough upside to make Brown a decent dynasty buy at his current ADP, but his redraft and start-up value are much less certain.
