College Production

A three-sport star out of Opelousas Catholic School in Louisiana, Keon Coleman received multiple Division 1 offers in basketball and football before enrolling at Michigan State in July 2021. As a freshman, Coleman played in 10 games (0 starts) and caught seven balls for 50 yards and a touchdown. In his sophomore campaign, Coleman started 11 games and led the Spartans with 58 receptions, 798 yards, and seven TD grabs en route to Honorable Mention All-Big-Ten honors. However, he entered the transfer protocol in April 2023 and transferred to Florida State the following month. In one season with the Seminoles, Coleman was named to the All-ACC First Team at WR, returner, and all-purpose after snagging 50 balls for 658 yards and 11 scores and returning 25 punts for 300 more yards (12.0 avg).

Strengths

• Excellent size. Coleman has the frame to be an effective red-zone threat on jump balls. Knows how to shield off defenders and use his body to high-point catch.

• Good hands catcher who works his way back to the quarterback and has the physical tools to stand out as a yards-after-catch threat.

• 30% of snaps at FSU came in the slot, where he projects to be a more credible NFl threat.

• All-ACC First-team punt returner (2023).

• Saw action as a reserve guard for Tom Izzo’s Michigan State basketball team in 2021-22 season.

Concerns

• Ranked third in FBS with 30 contested catch targets in 2023 but only came up with 10 grabs. This is a disappointing showing for a player with Coleman’s size and ball skills.

• Lacks speed off the line and downfield. 4.61 40-yard time was second-slowest among wideouts at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine.

• Had trouble gaining separation off the line and coming out of breaks. This is readily apparent in man coverage, where Coleman struggles to get open.

• Below average catch radius for a player who stands 6-3.

• May lack the separations and downfield ability to be an effective X receiver. NFL teams are likely to view Coleman as a “big slot” type of contributor.

Fantasy Outlook

Coleman checks the boxes for size and ball skills but is slow and has an awfully difficult time consistently getting open in man coverage. That makes him a very difficult prospect to evaluate. He’s got enough ceiling to be an effective red-zone slot receiver. However, the recent history of players with similar concerns becoming busts is concerning.

We will have to see where NFL clubs come out on Coleman. He could be selected anywhere from the top half of Round 2 to the bottom half of Round 3. The former would tell us that NFL personnel feel they can fix the issues. The latter would mean I would not have any interest in dynasty rookie drafts.
