College Production
The Longhorns boast a pair of highly-coveted young wideouts in the 2024 NFL Draft. First is the new record holder for the fastest 40-yard dash in Combine history, Xavier Worthy. Originally a 4-star recruit out of Central East High School in Fresno, California, where he starred in track and helped his win its first state championship, Worthy originally signed with Michigan before de-committing and joining Texas in April of 2021. Played in 12 games as a freshman, commanding a healthy 102 targets and scoring 12 touchdowns en route to AP Big-12 Newcomer of the Year and Offensive Freshman of the Year honors. Got 117 targets in 2022 and posted 60/760/9 numbers and was named to the Second-team All-Big-12 squad. Completed his college career with a career-high 75 grabs for 1,014 yards and five scores in 2023.
Strengths
• Burner. Set the all-time 40-yard dash record at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine with a blazing 4.21-second sprint.
• Explosive off the line. Worthy posted a 96th percentile Burst Score. Also top-4% in Vert and Broad jumps and a 92nd percentile 10-yard time.
• Excellent yards-after-catch threat due to his immense speed. Over half of receiving yards in 2023 came after the catch.
• Set Texas school records for freshman in receiving yards (981) and touchdown grabs (12).
• Experience in the slot and lining up outside.
• Excelled as a kick and punt returner.
• Record-breaking speed will warrant extra coverage attention.
Concerns
• Diminutive size. Worthy has 23rd percentile height, 21st percentile hand size, and 1st percentile weight at just 165 pounds.
• Does not have the frame or strength to shield defenders or outmuscle DBs. Only came down with 5-of-21 contested catch targets in 2023.
• Speed can be mitigated by stronger press coverage.
• Inconsistent effort as a blocker and on plays where he is not the primary read.
• 15 drops in three seasons at Texas.
Fantasy Outlook
Worthy’s lack of size will draw some Tank Dell comparisons, but they are not the same type of player. Watching tape reminds me of John Ross. I compared him to DeSean Jackson but Worthy worries me as a potential one-trick pony. Elite press coverage corners could negate his top-end speed.
Breaking the 40-yard dash time improved Worthy’s chances of slipping into Round 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft. We’ve also seen his dynasty adp shoot up.
Replacing Gabe Davis in Buffalo would be an intriguing fit for Worthy if he does wind up going on Day One. The trade of Stefon Diggs to the Texans makes that more likely and potentially more impactful.
For now, I’m viewing Worthy as a risky fantasy investment. I don’t think he has the type of game-changing ceiling D-Jax has and the floor is quite low. His rookie ADP is similar to his NFL value: A fringe first-round guy.
