College Production
A native of cajun country, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Davis-Price rushed for over 2,500 yards and scored 29 touchdowns, and was a top-10 national running back out of Southern University Laboratory High School. He chose to stay home and committed to the Tigers after graduating. Davis-Price contributed 369 scrimmage yards and six touchdowns as a true freshman backing up Clyde Edwards-Helaire during the Tigers’ national title run. He led LSU in rushing during the COVID-shortened 2020 campaign and again in 2021, where he rushed for a career-high 1,004 yards.
Strengths
• Outstanding blend of size (6-0, 211) and speed (90th-percentile speed score).
• Power back who loves lower his head and delivering punishment to would-be tacklers and creating yards after contact. Should be a plus short-yardage option.
• Very willing and capable pass protector who will not be forced onto the sidelines on obvious passing downs.
• Had an LSU school-record 36-carry, 287-yard, 3-score destruction of Florida.
• High-motor and energy runner who gets better as the game goes on, in a ground-out-the-clock closer role.
Weaknesses
• Not a natural pass-catcher.
• Is decisive, but needs to improve vision and decision-making. Could struggle to create if thrust into a scheme with multiple running lanes.
• Inconsistent effort from play-to-play.
• Prone to drops and fumbles but could be fixed with proper technique.
Fantasy Outlook
There’s a lot to like about Tyrion Davis-Price but a lack of any standout strengths. He’s like the very balanced video game back you would create as a kid where you assign equal attributes to all categories. Davis-Price has potential to develop into a solid power back with closing potential but needs to improve in some key areas before he will make much of an all-around impact. Landing spot will be critical but if he winds up in a situation where he can compete for an RB2 role right away, Davis-Price could be fantasy-relevant in 2022.
Post-Draft Recap
Davis-Price was a surprise selection with the 29th pick of the third round by Kyle Shanahan. While being nabbed by the RB Whisperer is a good thing on the surface, Davis-Price needs some work before he will contend for carries behind Eli Mitchell. By using a third-rounder on Davis-Price, Shanahan is opening the door for the rookie to contribute right away, which is bad news for Trey Sermon‘s fall from grace. With Shanahan’s track record, Davis-Price is definitely an intriguing pick in the third round of rookie-only drafts but his 2022 redraft status is much murkier.
